Backrooms to Open in Theaters on May 29
A24 will release the sci-fi horror film Backrooms in theaters on May 29, 2026. Directed by Kane Parsons, the film has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for language and some violent content/bloody images.
Backrooms is based on Parsons’ web series and is inspired by the “Backrooms” creepypasta. The anticipated film stars Academy Award nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, as well as Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.

In the film, written by Will Soodik, a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.
Backrooms was produced by James Wan, Michael Clear, Roberto Patino, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, Osgood Perkins, Chris Ferguson, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson.

The cinematography is by Jeremy Cox, the editing is by Greg Ng, and the music is by Edo Van Breemen and Kane Parsons. Principal photography for the movie began in Vancouver, Canada, in July 2025, and filming wrapped in August of that year.
