Star Trek Updates From New York Comic Con

At New York Comic Con today, Paramount+ shared new updates for its popular Star Trek series, including Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Picard.

The streaming service revealed the teaser trailer for Season 5 of its hit original series Star Trek: Discovery. The teaser, which you can watch below, unveils a first look at Rayner, played by Callum Keith Rennie (The Umbrella Academy, Jessica Jones), along with Moll and L’ak, played by Eve Harlow (The 100, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Elias Toufexis (Shadowhunters, Blood of Zeus).

Callum Keith Rennie joins the cast in a series regular role as Rayner. Rayner is a gruff, smart Starfleet Captain who holds a clear line between commander and crew – he leads, and they follow. Rayner’s all about the mission, whatever it may be, and he doesn’t do niceties along the way; his feeling is that you get the job done and apologize later.

He has a storied track record of wartime success, but he struggles in times of peace. Collaboration is not his strong suit. That said, if it serves the greater good, he’s willing to learn—but it won’t be easy.

Moll is a former courier turned outlaw who is highly intelligent and dangerous. She has an impressive strategic mind and a sharp wit. She goes into every situation with a clear plan and stays focused and clear-headed on her goal, even when things go awry. She’s not intimidated by Captain Burnham or the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery and will face down anyone who stands in her way to get what she wants.

L’ak is a former courier turned outlaw who is tough, impulsive, and fiercely protective of his beloved partner, Moll. So long as he knows she’s safe, he doesn’t care about collateral damage or its consequences – a perspective that makes him very dangerous at times and will put him on the opposite side of Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery when they come into conflict.

Also joining the panel was series star Sonequa Martin-Green, who beamed in virtually from the season five set in Toronto.

In season five, Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well… dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

The Season 5 cast members include Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker) and Blu del Barrio (Adira).

CBS Studios produces the series in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Michelle Paradise, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers. Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise serve as co-showrunners.

Paramount+ also debuted the official mid-season trailer (watch below) for season one of its hit original animated kids’ series, Star Trek: Prodigy. The trailer was introduced by executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman.

In addition, it was revealed during today’s New York Comic Con panel that Ronny Cox has joined the season one voice cast with a recurring role. Cox will reprise his Star Trek: The Next Generation role as Admiral Edward Jellico, a promotion from his original character, Captain Jellico.

Star Trek: Prodigy will have its mid-season return on Thursday, Oct. 27, exclusively for Paramount+ subscribers in the U.S., and on Friday, Oct. 28, in Latin America, Australia, Italy, and the U.K. Following the series’ return, new episodes of the 10-episode-long second half will be available to stream weekly on Thursdays. The series will air later in the year in South Korea, Germany, Italy, France, Austria and Switzerland.

The Prodigy portion of the Star Trek universe panel at New York Comic Con featured a conversation with series voice cast members Kate Mulgrew, Brett Gray, and Jameela Jamil, as well as executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman, Alex Kurtzman and Rod Roddenberry, and director and executive producer Ben Hibon.

Developed by Emmy Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters and Ninjago), the CG-animated series Star Trek: Prodigy is the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences and follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered — a first in the history of the franchise –, but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

In the remaining season one episodes, as the hopeful crew makes their way toward Starfleet, their dreams are threatened when they discover the U.S.S. Protostar harbors a weapon designed to tear the United Federation of Planets apart. To make matters worse, the U.S.S. Dauntless is on a manhunt for the Protostar as the real Vice Admiral Janeway is eager to uncover what happened to her missing former First Officer Chakotay. With these two ships on a collision course and destruction on the horizon, the fate of the Alpha Quadrant hangs in the balance.

Star Trek: Prodigy is from CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm; Nickelodeon Animation, led by president of animation Ramsey Naito; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers, alongside co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman.

Ben Hibon directs, executive produces, and serves as the creative lead of the animated series. Aaron Waltke and Patrick Krebs also currently serve as co-executive producers.

The voice cast includes Kate Mulgrew (Hologram Kathryn Janeway), Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner) and Jimmi Simpson (Drednok).

The series also features recurring voice cast members Daveed Diggs (Commander Tysess), Jameela Jamil (Ensign Asencia), Jason Alexander (Doctor Noum), Robert Beltran (Captain Chakotay), and Billy Campbell (Thadiun Okona).

And last but certainly not least, Paramount+ debuted a new teaser for the third and final season of its hit original series Star Trek: Picard (watch below). The final season premieres on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., with new episodes of the 10-episode-long season available to stream weekly on Thursdays.

It was also revealed that Tony Award winner Amanda Plummer (The Fisher King, Pulp Fiction) joined the cast in a recurring role as Vadic, the mysterious alien captain of the Shrike, a warship that has set its sights on Jean-Luc Picard and his old crewmates from his days on the Enterprise.

Mica Burton (Critical Role, Vampire: The Masquerade: L.A. by Night) and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut (Cruel Summer) also joined in recurring roles. Sharpe Chestnut plays Ensign Sidney La Forge, the eldest daughter of Geordi La Forge and helmsman of the U.S.S. Titan. Mica Burton plays Ensign Alandra La Forge, Geordi La Forge’s youngest daughter, who works alongside her father.

In addition, fans learned during today’s New York Comic Con panel that Brent Spiner’s character this season is named Lore, and they will also see the return of Daniel Davis as Professor Moriarty from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
