Self Reliance premiered at the 2023 SXSW Festival and was quickly nabbed by Hulu in a deal with MRC, which backed the project, and Paramount Global Content Distribution.

The film stars Jake Johnson (New Girl, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Minx), Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Natalie Morales (Parks and Recreation), and Andy Samberg (Palm Springs).

The cast is rounded out by GaTa (Dave), Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), Mary Holland (Happiest Season), Boban Marjanović (Hustle), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), and Wayne Brady (How I Met Your Mother).

Self Reliance follows Tommy (Johnson), who is offered a million dollars to play a game in which he must outwit hunters as they attempt to kill him. He thinks he has found the perfect loophole – they can only attack when he’s alone – but his only problem is that none of his friends or family believe the game is real.

The genre-bending film was produced by The Lonely Island and Walcott Productions, as well as Ali Bell, Joe Hardesty, and Jake Johnson. The executive producers include Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone.

After its one-night theatrical showing, Self Reliance will be available to stream on Hulu on January 12, 2024. You can watch the official trailer for the film, which is rated R for language throughout, on YouTube.
