Paramount Pictures has released the new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which will open in theaters on December 20, 2024. Tickets for the highly anticipated sequel are now on sale.
The third installment has been rated PG by the MPA for action, some violence, rude humor, thematic elements and mild language. The first two movies also received a PG rating.
Paramount Pictures and SEGA today also announced a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 “Opening Day Fan Event.” To celebrate the cinematic experience, Paramount Pictures will give fans the opportunity to see the movie in theatres at an opening day movie event on Thursday, December 19.
Fans can see the movie first at 3 p.m. local time presented exclusively in premium formats at participating locations, including Dolby Cinema, 4DX, DBOX, ScreenX and other premium format theatres across the country. Tickets for the “Opening Day Fan Event” are on sale today.

Ticketholders seeing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the “Fan Event” screening will also see additional behind the scenes content prior to the feature for this special show and will also receive limited-edition gifts, including one of four different limited edition character keychains plus an exclusive 12″x18″ collector’s art print created for fans attending this one-night event – while supplies last.

Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.
Director Jeff Fowler returns along with an all-star cast, including Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, and newcomers Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter, with Keanu Reeves joining the franchise as Shadow the Hedgehog.
Based on the SEGA video game series, the new installment was again directed by Fowler from a script by Pat Casey & Josh Miller, and John Whittington. The script was based on a story by Casey and Miller.
The first movie opened in theaters in February 2020 and grossed $319.7 million worldwide, with $148.9 million coming from North America and $170.7 million from international markets. The second film, released in April 2022, earned $405.4 million globally, with $190.8 million from domestic theaters and $214.5 million internationally.
Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno produced Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which was executive produced by Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, Yukio Sugino, Jeff Fowler, Tommy Gormley, and Tim Miller.
