Couture, Starring Angelina Jolie and Louis Garrel, Acquired by Vertical

Following its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Vertical has acquired North American rights to Couture, the latest film from French César-nominated writer and director Alice Winocour (Paris Memories, Proxima).

Starring Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie (Maria), Louis Garrel (Little Women), Ella Rumpf (Raw), Garance Marillier (Titane), newcomer Anyier Anei, Finnegan Oldfield (Alpha), and Vincent Lindon (The Measure of a Man), Vertical is slating the film for release later this year.

Set during the frenzy of Paris Fashion Week, three women’s lives intersect: Maxine (Jolie), a filmmaker who discovers she has breast cancer and is drawn into a love story with a familiar collaborator (Garrel); Ada (Anei), a fresh face in modeling, escaping a predetermined future back home in South Sudan; and Angèle (Rumpf), a makeup artist working in the shadows of the catwalks.

As their paths cross, the film reveals the resilience beneath the surface of public performance and honors the solidarity shared among these women across professions, cultures, and continents.

The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, followed by presentations at the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival, the 20th Rome Film Festival, and the 2025 QCinema International Film Festival.

“Couture is a film about women’s bodies. It tells women who bear scars that we can be stronger by sharing our wounds,” said Winocour. “There is also something deeply political, for me, in telling the story of a collective rather than an individual destiny – I wanted to restore depth and complexity to women across generations and backgrounds, beyond the superficial images we’re so often given.

“I’m grateful to Vertical for championing the film and for helping these women’s stories resonate across cultures and borders.”

“Angelina’s role in Couture is delivered with quiet intensity that is both intimate and deeply personal,” stated Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey. “This is brave filmmaking at its finest; Vertical is proud to be releasing another feature from Alice, following Proxima’s debut in 2020.”

The film was produced by Charles Gillibert of CG Cinéma, Zhang Xin of Closer Media, William Horberg, and Jolie, and was executive produced by Bob Xu, Benjamin Hess, and Luc Bricault.

The additional talent includes director of photography André Chemetoff (The King of Algiers), editors Julien Lacheray (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) and Lilian Corbeille (The Animal Kingdom), costume designer Pascaline Chavanne (Nouvelle Vague), and production designer Florian Sanson (Paris Memories), with casting by Catherine Charrier (Shéhérazade) and music by Anna von Hausswolff and Filip Leyman (The Most Beautiful Boy in the World).

The deal was negotiated by Jarowey and SVP of Acquisitions, Tony Piantedosi, on behalf of Vertical (Hamlet, The Astronaut, Dead of Winter, Eden), and by UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.
