A24 and Dolby are also teaming up to bring the highly anticipated release of undertone to theatres in Dolby Cinema. Dolby Cinema early access screenings will take place on March 9, prior to the nationwide theatrical release in other formats on March 13.

The movie had its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival last year and was snatched up by A24 in a competitive bidding war. The film had its stateside premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last month.

From the glow of her laptop, with her mother slowly dying upstairs, skeptic Evy Babic (Nina Kiri) analyzes the cryptic recordings through headphones in the dead of night with her believer and remote co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco), trying to make sense of the unseen horror experienced by a pregnant married couple inside their own home.

As Evy navigates complex personal matters of her own, and the podcasters inch closer to harrowing revelations, mysterious forces begin trickling from the audio files into Evy’s surroundings, furthering her psychological unraveling.

The horror film was written and directed by Ian Tuason

Shot inside Tuason’s childhood home in Toronto, and inspired by his own caregiving experience, undertone builds on micro-horror’s found-footage formula through innovative production and sound design, pushing Tuason’s debut into the realm of auditory horror.

“Sometimes the most terrifying thing of all is our imagination, and what we project onto something that may or may not be there,” said Tuason. “This is a found audio movie and a soundscape above all else.

“I created a sound design for this story where everything is directional — like Evy listening to the audio files, the audience can close their eyes and feel where everything is — or might be. When something far away is suddenly getting closer behind you, the terror becomes heightened and amplified.”

“undertone plunges audiences into a terrifying soundscape, and partnering with A24 to bring this chilling cinematic experience to Dolby Cinema allows audiences to experience every whisper, silence, and scream in Ian Tuason’s film,” said Dolby Laboratories’ Jed Harmsen.

“Immersive Dolby Atmos sound will reveal greater details in each scare in this auditory horror film, while the precision of the Dolby Vision picture quality provides sharper clarity in the darkness, making a suspenseful experience like no other.”

In addition to undertone, A24‘s upcoming projects include The Drama starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, The Death of Robin Hood starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, Mother Mary starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, and Backrooms from Kane Parsons.
