A24 has revealed the official trailer and poster for the dial-up disaster comedy Y2K, which will be released in theaters on December 6, 2024. The movie is rated R for bloody violence, strong sexual content/nudity, pervasive language, and teen drug and alcohol use.
The movie takes place on the last night of 1999. Two high school juniors crash a New Year’s Eve party and find themselves fighting for their lives.
Directed by Kyle Mooney, Y2K had its World Premiere at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 9, 2024. Mooney wrote the script with Evan Winter.
The film stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Alicia Silverstone, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Durst.
The film was produced by Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, Allison Goodwin, Christopher Storer, Cooper Wehde, and Evan Winter. Bill Pope is the cinematographer, David Marks is the editor, and Jason Singleton is the production designer.
Principal photography for Y2K began in April 2023 in Ringwood, New Jersey. The following month, filming continued in Ringwood, Chatham Borough, and Clark.
The film is currently Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a rating of 63%. The critic consensus is that “Y2K earns points for ambition and sheer audacity, even if it struggles to keep the laughs coming while maintaining a messy tonal blend.”
The movie’s production companies include A24, Strong Baby Productions, and American Light & Fixture.
