Wild at Heart Returns to Theaters in a 4K Restoration
Universal Pictures has announced the nationwide theatrical re-release of Wild at Heart (unrated version), the Academy Award-nominated road-trip thriller from four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive), starring Oscar winners Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas) and Laura Dern (Marriage Story).
A sexy and savage journey through the menacing underworld of the American South, Wild at Heart returns to theaters in a new 4K digital restoration nationwide beginning October 30, 2026, for a special limited engagement.

Wild at Heart was restored by Criterion in collaboration with Universal Pictures, supervised by the film’s director of photography, Frederick Elmes, and approved by the David Lynch Estate, and featuring a new 5.1 surround soundtrack created from the original 6-track DME stems by Dean Hurley.
In Wild at Heart, the hot-tempered Sailor Ripley (Cage) is newly released from prison and reunited with the two loves of his life: Lula Fortune (Dern) and his signature snakeskin jacket. The couple hits the road, incurring the wrath of Lula’s vengeful and unstable mother, Marietta (three-time Academy Award nominee Diane Ladd, Dern’s real-life mother).
As Sailor and Lula drive west from North Carolina, Marietta hires private detective Johnnie Farragut (Harry Dean Stanton) to track them down while secretly recruiting the bloodthirsty gangster Santos (J.E. Freeman) to find the pair and kill Sailor.
As Sailor and Lula make their way through New Orleans and on to Big Tuna, Texas, they cross paths with Sailor’s former acquaintance, Perdita Durango (Academy Award nominee Isabella Rossellini), and the deranged criminal, Bobby Peru (four-time Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe).
Short on cash and increasingly desperate, Sailor agrees to join Peru in an ill-fated robbery. But even as violence, dark secrets and an increasingly dangerous cast of characters threaten to derail their journey, Sailor and Lula remain determined to find their own happy ending somewhere beyond the Yellow Brick Road.
Adapted by Lynch from Barry Gifford’s novel, Wild at Heart marked the filmmaker’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated Blue Velvet. Lynch had read Gifford’s manuscript before its publication and became so taken with Sailor and Lula that he was inspired to bring their story to the screen as an unconventional homage to The Wizard of Oz.
His Southern Gothic adaptation infused the lovers-on-the-run tale with pitch-black comedy, graphic violence, feverish romance and heavy metal. “It’s a kind of a Hell world with a lot of love between Sailor and Lula,” Lynch said of the film.
Wild at Heart made its Cannes Film Festival Competition debut in May 1990, just weeks after Lynch’s landmark television series Twin Peaks premiered in the United States. The provocative film inspired impassioned reactions from critics and audiences before ultimately receiving the festival’s highest honor, the Palme d’Or.
Released on August 17, 1990, Wild at Heart earned roughly $15 million worldwide during its original theatrical run. Ladd received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as the volatile Marietta.
The film also played an unexpected role in transforming Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” into a breakout hit. After hearing an instrumental version of the song in Wild at Heart, Atlanta radio music director Lee Chesnut began programming Isaak’s original recording, which had been released the previous year. The song soon gained widespread airplay and ultimately reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of Isaak’s signature recordings.
Following its theatrical return, Wild at Heart will be released by The Criterion Collection on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on November 17, 2026. Tickets for the theatrical re-release of Wild at Heart can be purchased here.
