Unaccustomed Earth First Look Featuring Freida Pinto
Netflix has shared a first look at Unaccustomed Earth, inspired by the internationally beloved short-story collection by Jhumpa Lahiri of the same name. The eight-episode drama series premieres on December 17, 2026.
Unaccustomed Earth is a groundbreaking new family drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, longing, loss, and belonging. Rich with nuance, emotion, and unforgettable characters, the series invites you into the culturally vibrant lives of multi-generational families in Cambridge and Boston, MA.
When Parul Chaudhury (Freida Pinto), a wife and mother who sacrificed her college first love to honor her father’s wishes, gets a life-changing cancer diagnosis, she moves her family from India back to the one place where she truly felt at home – Cambridge, MA.
Determined to finally pursue the life she never got to live before it’s too late, her radical choices upend the lives of everyone she loves, changing the fabric of this immigrant community forever.
“Every character has something universal…From the perspective of Parul’s character is the question, ‘How far would you go to live the dream that you really want to live? And are you up for the consequences?’” said Freida Pinto.
Showrunner, executive producer, and writer Madhuri Shekar also talked about adapting Jhumpa Lahiri’s Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of short stories into one interwoven story: “This image came to me of all of these characters from the different stories sitting around the Thanksgiving table together…these connections started forming between them. This beautiful community just blossomed.”
The series regulars include Freida Pinto (Parul), Siddarth (Amit), Indraneil Sengupta (Jai), Parveen Kaur (Nina), Sarayu Blue (Ruma), Justin Bartha (Adam), Adi Roy (Kaushik), Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig (Hema), and Jayant Kripalani (Pranab).
The additional key cast members include Ishita Bansal (Divya), Meera Simham (Swati), Ravi Kapoor (Vishal), Swayam Bhatia (Sudha), and Palomi Ghosh (Anjali).
The executive producers include Madhuri Shekar (3 Body Problem, The Nevers), John Wells, Jhumpa Lahiri, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow, and Celia Costas.
Ritesh Batra will direct and executive produce episodes 101 and 102 of Unaccustomed Earth, which comes from Warner Bros. Television.
