Madden Movie Is Coming to Prime Video in November
Prime Video has announced that the Madden movie, starring Nicolas Cage as the legendary NFL coach John Madden, will begin streaming on November 18, 2026. The movie has not been rated by the Motion Picture Association (MPA).
Directed by David O. Russell, the film charts Madden’s unlikely journey from Super Bowl–winning coach for the Oakland Raiders to the face of one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, Madden NFL.
Inspired by the life of a beloved American icon, Madden chronicles John Madden’s incredible journey alongside best friend and true original Al Davis—from a Super Bowl-winning partnership with the Raiders, to becoming football’s most recognizable voice, to building the worldwide Madden NFL video game.
Madden is the celebration of a brilliant mind whose once-in-a-century spirit and personality, partnership with his daring wife Virginia, lifelong friendships, and infectious love of people and football transcended the world of sports.
The film stars Nicolas Cage (Spider-Noir) as Madden, the skilled and effervescent coach who took a band of misfits all the way to an unlikely Super Bowl victory, Christian Bale (The Fighter) as Raiders owner Al Davis, and John Mulaney (John Mulaney: New in Town) as EA Sports founder Trip Hawkins.
The cast also includes Kathryn Hahn (The Studio) as Madden’s wife, Virginia, Sienna Miller (Jack Ryan: Ghost War) as Davis’ wife, Carol, and Shane Gillis (Gilly and Keeves: The Special).
Madden is directed by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) from a script he wrote following an earlier version by Cambron Clark.
Todd Black is producing through his Escape Artists banner, along with partners Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch. Jonathan Shukat also produces alongside Russell and Matthew Budman. Escape Artists’ David Bloomfield is executive producer.
Madden was one of the most recognizable figures in American football history. As head coach of the Raiders from 1969 to 1978, he compiled a career winning percentage of .759—the highest among coaches with more than 100 career victories—and led the team to victory in Super Bowl XI.
After retiring from coaching, Madden became one of the most beloved broadcasters in NFL history, working for all four major networks over a three-decade career. In 1988, he partnered with EA Sports to lend his name and expertise to what would become the Madden NFL video game franchise, one of the best-selling game series of all time. Madden died on December 28, 2021, at the age of 85.
