The God of the Woods Starts Production in New York
Netflix has announced that production on The God of the Woods has officially begun in New York. The series adaptation of Liz Moore’s New York Times’ bestselling novel is now filming upstate in both the Hudson River Valley and the Adirondacks.
“We’re thrilled to be filming in the state that inspired the story and the region where it’s actually set,” said co-creators and co-showrunners Liz Hannah and Liz Moore. The Adirondacks have a fascinating history, and we feel inspired every time we’re there by the Park’s beauty and complexity. We hope to do it justice on the screen.”

From executive producers and co-showrunners Liz Hannah (The Girl from Plainville, Mindhunter, The Post) and Liz Moore (Long Bright River), The God of the Woods is a multi-generational drama series set in the Adirondacks, exploring the Van Laar family’s dark secrets, class tensions, and the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of 13 year old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp—in the wake of an earlier family tragedy that may be related.
As the past and present collide, the Van Laars’ wealth and influence unravel, revealing the damaging consequences of privilege and the abuse of power.
The cast of the Sony Pictures Television production includes Kerry Condon, Maya Hawke, Damon Gupton, Ella Rubin, Susannah Perkins, Benjamin Walker, Nell Fisher, and Autumn Molina.
The executive producers include Liz Hannah and Liz Moore, as well as Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty for Original Film.
The God of the Woods joins a lineup of Netflix productions filmed in New York, including The Four Seasons, Zero Day, Survival of the Thickest, YOU, Sirens, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and more.
