Star Trek Updates From New York Comic Con

Paramount+ today held its Star Trek universe panel at New York Comic Con, moderated by featured host of CBS Mornings and CBS News national correspondent Vladimir Duthiers.

The streaming service announced that its original movie Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere on Friday, January 24, 2025, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available. New teaser art for the highly anticipated movie was also revealed.

The Star Trek: Section 31 presentation included a conversation with cast members Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, and Robert Kazinsky, along with executive producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi. The panel also featured a video appearance from the film’s star, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh.

In the movie, Yeoh reprises her fan-favorite role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou — a character she played in Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season – who joins a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.

Star Trek: Section 31 also stars Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Emmy winner Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia), and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry). Miku Martineau (Kate) portrays a young Philippa Georgiou.

Next up, Paramount+ announced that the original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been renewed for a second season. The news comes as Season 1 is currently in production in Toronto. It was also announced that Emmy Award winner Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) will be a recurring special guest star in Season 1.

Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager, Starfleet Academy, Prodigy) made an unexpected on-stage appearance before introducing a surprise livestream straight from the set of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The livestream included executive producer and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman, who is currently directing the series, as he announced that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been greenlit for a second season alongside cast members including Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner.

Produced by CBS Studios, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. The series will introduce viewers to this young group of cadets as they come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism.

Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive produce the series alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber.

Gaia Violo wrote the series’ premiere episode. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Paramount Global Content Distribution distributes the series.

Paramount+ unveiled a new clip from the upcoming third season of its hit original series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The panel for the series featured an exclusive conversation with cast members Ethan Peck and Carol Kane, alongside executive producers and co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers.

The new season is set to debut in 2025. Paramount+ previously announced the series has also been renewed for a fourth season. It was also announced during the panel that Rhys Darby (Jumanji: The Next Level) will guest star in the upcoming season.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The series follows Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock, Number One, and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the starship as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.

The series stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Martin Quinn, along with special guest stars Paul Wesley and Carol Kane.

CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment produce the series.

Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Jenny Lumet, Henry Alonso Myers, Aaron Baiers, Dana Horgan, Davy Perez, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers.

Paramount+ also debuted an exclusive clip from the fifth and final season premiere of its hit animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks at New York Comic Con. The panel featured an exclusive conversation with voice cast members Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Eugene Cordero, alongside executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan.

New final season art was also released, paying homage to Star Trek V: The Final Frontier movie poster. The fifth and final season will premiere on Paramount+ with two episodes on Thursday, October 24, in the U.S. and internationally.

Following the premiere, new episodes of the 10-episode-long season will drop every Thursday on the service leading up to the series finale on Thursday, December 19.

In Season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with closing “space potholes” — subspace rifts that are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for Jr. Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford… if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries, and scariest of all: their own career aspirations.

This upcoming season on Paramount+ is a celebration of this underdog crew who are dangerously close to being promoted out of the lower decks and into strange new Starfleet roles.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated comedy series that focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos. The Starfleet crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos includes the voices of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Eugene Cordero; the bridge crew is voiced by Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment.
