Award-winning studio NEON announced today that its summer box office phenomenon, Longlegs, written and directed by Osgood Perkins and starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, has surpassed $100 million at the global box office.
With a current cumulative gross of $72 million in the U.S. and Canada, Longlegs is the highest independent film release of 2024 thus far and the top-grossing R-rated horror film of 2024.
Longlegs was produced by Dave Caplan of C2, Dan Kagan of Traffic, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones from Range, Nicolas Cage under his production company Saturn Films, and Chris Ferguson of Oddfellows. C2 also fully financed the film.
Black Bear represented the international sales rights, which account for $31 million of the worldwide gross, and also distributed directly in the UK and Ireland, which is the top-grossing international territory for the film, currently with $10 million. The film has yet to open in a number of major territories, including Latin America and Italy. Black Bear’s sister company, Elevation Pictures, also distributed the film in Canada, which accounts for just over $7 million of the North American gross.
Longlegs became NEON’s highest-grossing film of all time after the Academy Award-winning film Parasite, which earned $53.4 million. It has surpassed A24’s second highest-grossing film of all time, Civil War, which is at $68.6 million to date.
In only its third week of release in the US, Longlegs became the highest-grossing indie horror film of the last ten years, surpassing A24’s Talk to Me at $48 million and Insidious Chapter 3 at $52.2 million from then-Universal’s Focus. Longlegs also outgrossed A24‘s Hereditary’s cumulative gross of $44 million in just ten days.
Perkins is set to reunite with NEON, C2, and Black Bear for his next film, the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, starring Theo James, which will be released in February 2025. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones from Range and Chris Ferguson of Oddfellows are producing alongside James Wan and Dave Caplan for C2.
In addition, NEON will also release Perkins’ Keeper, starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland. It will reteam with Maika Monroe on They Follow, the sequel to David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows.
