With pre-production beginning for Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel 2, Deadline is reporting that Zawe Ashton (Velvet Buzzsaw) has been cast as the villain of the sequel. The site adds that it is unknown which villain Zawe Ashton will play.
In addition to Velvet Buzzsaw, Ashton’s TV credits include Not Safe for Work, Fresh Meat, and Wanderlust, as well as the feature films St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold, Blitz, Nocturnal Animals, and Greta.
Next up, she is expected to have a role in the fourth season of the popular Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale.
Candyman helmer Nia DaCosta will direct the Captain Marvel sequel, which is scheduled for a November 11, 2022 release. Brie Larson, Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris (WandaVision) are also on board to star.
The first film was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The movie was released in March of 2019 and grossed an impressive $1.128 billion worldwide, with $426.8 million coming from domestic theaters and $701.4 million from international markets.
Megan McDonnell is writing the script for Captain Marvel 2. McDonnell is a staff writer on the Marvel Studios series WandaVision, which is now streaming on Disney+.
Story details are being kept under wraps, but it is expected the sequel will move the setting of the 1990s from the first movie to the present day.
The first Captain Marvel (buy at Amazon) follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes.
While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
