Yet Another Director Is Leaving the Uncharted Adaptation

The revolving door of directors for the big-screen Uncharted adaptation is continuing with the departure of Travis Knight (BumblebeeKubo and the Two Strings). According to Deadline, it is actually Uncharted star Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man movie that is causing schedule conflicts with Knight. Holland will start filming the next Spider-Man movie in the summer of 2020, so the Uncharted movie will get a later start date and a new release date. Holland and Mark Wahlberg remain attached to star.

In addition to Knight, previous directors who have been attached to Sony Pictures’ Uncharted adaptation include Dan Trachtenberg, David O. Russell, Seth Gordon and Shawn Levy.

Tom Holland will play Nathan “Nate” Drake in Uncharted and Mark Wahlberg is set to play Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Sully is an American treasure hunter as well as an old friend and mentor at one point of Drake.

The project will become the first feature production of Sony PlayStation Productions. Headed by Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, PlayStation Productions has come on to produce alongside Chuck Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad. Qizilbash and Swan will serve as executive producers.

Based on the Naughty Dog video games for PlayStation consoles, the film is said to take its basis from the sequence in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception in which the young Nathan “Nate” Drake (Holland) encounters his partner Victor Sullivan for the first time.

The movie, written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Rafe Judkins, had been set for a December 18, 2020 release.

There have been four games in the franchise from Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment, including Uncharted (2007), Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (2011), and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016). A standalone game, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, was also released in 2017 and featured the characters Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross.
