Writer and director Simon Kinberg has revealed that the much-talked-about X-Men: Dark Phoenix reshoots are officially underway. In a series of Instagram posts (as well as a post from star Jessica Chastain) from a few days ago, the filmmaker says the Montreal filming has begun.
Collider previously reported that the X-Men: Dark Phoenix reshoots will take two-and-a-half weeks. The filming will involve some additional action in the film’s third act, a couple of new scenes, and adding some shots for existing scenes.
Sophie Turner previously spoke about the reshoots after the film was delayed to a February 14, 2019 release by 20th Century Fox. “All I know is that I’ll be back in Montreal at some point soon, and that the Valentine’s Day release date is quite a positive thing, because Black Panther got released on Valentine’s Day. So we’re keeping positive about it,” she said.
Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix picks up 10 years after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse and Turner says the new movie will be very different.
“This movie is kind of a lot more emotion-based, much more grounded,” she said. “There are, of course, those supernatural elements, but this one is really character-driven – a really emotional story about a girl battling with a deadly mix of mental health problems and being a superhero. So it’s all wrapped up into one, and it’s a movie about struggle and abandonment and not knowing yourself. Yeah, an internal struggling. It’s so, so interesting. It’s such a departure from the last movie.”
Dark Phoenix finds the X-Men in a place they’ve never been before: National heroes! The team embarks on a routine mission into space where things quickly take a turn and they find themselves in a battle with an intergalactic force over team member Jean Grey. The film also stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Lamar Johnson.
