Sony Pictures‘ Universe of Marvel Characters is off to a strong start, as Venom took in an impressive $32.8 million on Friday from 4,250 locations, which puts the studio’s weekend projection at more than $70 million. The studio said the film is also playing strong overseas, but numbers won’t be available until tomorrow.
While critics lambasted the Ruben Fleischer-directed film, audiences gave Venom a B+ CinemaScore and the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is at 89%.
With a screenplay by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. The film is produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal. David Householter, Stan Lee, Kelly Marcel, Tom Hardy, Edward Cheng and Howard Chen serve as executive producers.
Opening in second place at the Friday box office was Warner Bros. Pictures‘ A Star is Born, which earned $15.8 million from 3,686 theaters. Internationally, A Star is Born grossed $6 million from 31 markets. The film received an A CinemaScore and is getting great reviews from both critics and audiences.
A Star is Born stars four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (American Sniper, American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) and multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Lady Gaga. Cooper helms the drama, marking his directorial debut. A Star is Born is produced by Bill Gerber, Jon Peters, Bradley Cooper, Todd Phillips and Lynette Howell Taylor; with Basil Iwanyk, Michael Rapino, Heather Parry and Ravi Mehta serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Will Fetters & Bradley Cooper and Eric Roth.
20th Century Fox also released The Hate U Give in just 36 theaters where the film earned $174,868. Directed by George Tillman Jr, the big screen adaptation stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr, with Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Common and Anthony Mackie. The Hate U Give was produced by Robert Teitel, George Tillman, Jr., Marty Bowen, and Wyck Godfrey.
