Venom Box Office Bites Off $205.2 Million Worldwide

Sony Pictures‘ Universe of Marvel Characters is off to a strong start, as the Venom box office reached an impressive $205.2 million globally this weekend. The film has set new October opening records both domestically and internationally. Gravity (2013) held the previous domestic opening record with $55.7 million, and The Martian (2015) held the worldwide opening record for October with $142 million.

The Ruben Fleischer-directed film grossed $80 million domestically from 4,250 locations, an average of $18,831 per location, and internationally Venom took in $125.2 million. South Korea led all the overseas markets with $15.7 million, while Russia brought in $11.7 million, the UK took in $9.3 million, the film grossed $7.1 million in Mexico, and Australia delivered $6.4 million. Major markets to come still include France, Japan, and China.

While critics lambasted the film, audiences gave Venom a B+ CinemaScore and the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is at 89%. With a screenplay by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. The film, made for $100 million, was produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal.

Opening in second place was Warner Bros. Pictures’ A Star is Born, which earned $41.3 million from 3,686 theaters, an average of $11,191 per site. It also grossed $14 million in 31 overseas markets this weekend and is up to $55.3 million globally. The film received an A CinemaScore and is getting great reviews from both critics and audiences. A Star is Born stars four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (American Sniper, American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) and multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Lady Gaga. Cooper helms the drama, marking his directorial debut.

Warner Bros.’ Smallfoot dropped one spot to third and just 35% in ticket sales its second weekend. The animated film added $14.9 million and is up to $42.8 million domestically. Internationally, Smallfoot earned $11.7 million from 57 markets and has reached $32.5 million. The worldwide total is at $75.3 million. Directed by Karey Kirkpatrick, the film features the voices of Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Gina Rodriguez, Danny DeVito, Yara Shahidi, Ely Henry, and Jimmy Tatro.

After topping the box office last weekend, the Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish comedy Night School (Universal Pictures) dropped to fourth place its second weekend with $12.3 million. Made for $29 million, the movie has made $46.8 million domestically. Night School has also earned $12 million overseas and is at $58.8 million worldwide. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, the film also stars Rob Riggle, Taran Killam and Romany Malco.

Rounding out the top five domestically was The House with a Clock in Its Walls (Universal), which added $7.3 million and has earned $55.1 million after three weeks. Internationally, the movie has earned $32.3 million for a worldwide total of $87.4 million.Made for $42 million, The House with a Clock in Its Walls was directed by Eli Roth and stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic, and Kyle MacLachlan.

20th Century Fox also released The Hate U Give in just 36 theaters where the film earned $500,000, an average of $13,889 per theater. Directed by George Tillman Jr, the big screen adaptation stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr, with Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Common and Anthony Mackie.

It’s also worth noting that Johnny English Strikes Again (Universal) is doing very well in its international release. The comedy sequel added another $14.1 million this weekend and has grossed $66.5 million overseas. The film doesn’t open in North America until October 26th. Directed by David Kerr, Johnny English Strikes Again stars Rowan Atkinson, Olga Kurylenko, Ben Miller, Jake Lacy, and Emma Thompson.
