Vagrant Queen First Look Revealed by SYFY

-

SYFY today announced the 10-episode series Vagrant Queen is set to premiere on Friday, March 27 at 10/9c. Based on the original comic book series from Vault Comics, Vagrant Queen is comprised of an all-female team of writers and directors featuring Jem Garrard as creator and showrunner.

Vagrant Queen follows Elida (Adriyan Rae) from child queen to orphaned outcast, as she scavenges the treacherous corners of the galaxy, always one step ahead of the Republic government out to extinguish her bloodline.

When her old friend Isaac (Tim Rozon) shows up claiming her mother Xevelyn is still alive, they head off with their new ally, Amae (Alex McGregor), to stage a rescue that will take her back into the perilous heart of her former kingdom and up against a deadly foe from her childhood, Commander Lazaro (Paul du Toit).

Vagrant Queen is produced by Blue Ice Pictures and filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. Jem Garrard developed the series for television and serves as showrunner and executive producer.

Lance Samuels and Daniel Iron serve as executive producers. F.J. DeSanto and Damian Wassel also serve as executive producers on behalf of Vault Comics.

The comics are written by Eisner and GLAAD Media Award-nominated author Magdalene Visaggio (Kim & Kim, Eternity Girl, Transformers vs. Visionaries), and illustrated by Jason Smith.

The comics are described as follows: “Vagrant Queen is the story of Elida, a former child queen driven from her throne and forced to wander the galaxy as she evades the revolutionaries who continue to hunt her down. Elida has built a life as a scavenger and outlaw, when an old frenemy, Isaac, turns up with news about her long-lost mother. Against her better judgment, she is forced to return to her broken kingdom in hopes of staging a rescue before a deadly foe from childhood, Commander Lazaro, can find her.”

“The one thing I always wanted Vagrant Queen to be,” said Visaggio,” was a space opera that didn’t take itself too seriously. Let other people have prophecies and Chosen Ones and restoring the ancient throne; I wanted to do a book about someone running from the past instead of eager to uncover it, where the mystery wasn’t in some mystical power or forgotten legend, but in a young woman struggling to make her own way in the universe.”

“I had so much fun making Vagrant Queenand hopefully that came through in the finished product,” said artist Jason Smith. “The comic ended up being this cool mix of the things that we both love in sci-fi, space operas, pulp stories and comic books. I’m so excited to see this get adapted to the screen.”

“The Vault team couldn’t be more excited to see Vagrant Queen on TV,” said Vault’s CEO and Publisher Damian Wassel. “It’s a major milestone for the series creators, and a major milestone for Vault. We built this company to elevate new and important storytellers, and it’s awesome to see series from one of our most diverse creative teams hit the screen first.”
