Twister Remake in the Works at Universal!

Universal Pictures is developing a remake to the 1996 blockbuster Twister (buy at Amazon) with Joseph Kosinski in negotiations to direct, according to Variety. The original film was directed by Speed helmer Jan de Bont.

Frank Marshall will produce the movie and the studio is reportedly meeting with writers to take on the script. In the original, Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton play scientists pursuing the most destructive weatherfront to sweep through mid-America’s Tornado Alley in 50 years.

By launching electronic sensors into the funnel, the storm chasers hope to obtain enough data to create an improved warning system. But to do so, they must intercept the twisters’ deadly path.

Also part of the cast were Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Sean Whalen, Jeremy Davies, Joey Slotnick, Todd Field, Scott Thomson, Wendle Josepher, Lois Smith, and Zach Grenier.

Made for $92 million, Twister grossed $494.5 million at the worldwide box office, with $241.7 million coming from North American theaters and $252.8 million from overseas.

De Bont directed the movie from a script by the late Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. Ian Bryce, Crichton and Kathleen Kennedy were the producers of the film, which was made by Warner Bros. Pictures, Universal and Amblin. The executive producers included Steven Spielberg, Laurie MacDonald, Gerald R. Molen and Walter Parkes.

Senior VP of production Sara Scott will oversee the Twister remake for Universal Pictures.

Joseph Kosinski previously directed TRON: Legacy, Oblivion, and Only the Brave. His next project is Top Gun: Maverick, which Paramount Pictures will released in theaters on December 23, 2020.
