THQ Nordic Acquires Gunfire Games, Goodbye Kansas & Milestone

THQ Nordic announced today that the Austrian video game publisher has acquired three studios, including Gunfire Games, Goodbye Kansas Game Invest AB, and Milestone s.r.l.

Gunfire Games is the developer behind the critically-acclaimed game series Darksiders, Chronos and From Other Suns and is a long-term development partner of THQ Nordic. Through the acquisition, THQ Nordic adds a strong team of RPG experts and award-winning VR developers with an existing intellectual property portfolio and an exciting new game pipeline.

To put it in THQ Nordic’s words: “We are stoked to have Gunfire on board and are very excited about our collaborative future and the projects we will realize together.”
To put it in Fury’s words: “Welcome to the family, I guess…”

The acquisition includes the development studio that includes a team of 63 creative and technical game developers and all IP rights. Gunfire will remain an independent development studio under THQ Nordic. It will continue to be led by CEO David Adams and all active founders will remain in their current roles.

THQ Nordic has acquired Goodbye Kansas Game Invest AB (GKGI) through its wholly owned subsidiary THQ Nordic Lager 1 AB. The acquisition includes a portfolio of minority investments in five early-stage development studios; Palindrome Interactive, Fall Damage, Neon Giant, Kavalri and Framebunker as well as royalty rights to THQ Nordic’s upcoming game Biomutant. GKGI’s previous investments in IGDB, Bearded Dragons and Goodbye Kansas VR will be retained in Goodbye Kansas AB.

“Goodbye Kansas Game Invest is led by a skilled team with strong insights and experience in developing and growing gaming companies. Besides continuing to support the current portfolio, the transaction provides a great platform for strategic investments in early-stage companies as well as in established teams starting their own development studios”, says Lars Wingefors, Group-CEO THQ Nordic AB.

“The Nordic countries have positioned themselves among the most successful gaming communities in the world and we strongly believe in their continued potential. We are looking forward to partner up with THQ Nordic who share our passion for the gaming industry.”, says Per-Arne Lundberg, CEO Goodbye Kansas Game Invest.

“Goodbye Kansas AB has made a strategic decision to divest Goodbye Kansas Game Invest AB in order to focus on our core business within Studio and Infinite Entertainment. I am satisfied that the new home to Game Invest is THQ Nordic, a company we know well and who we are confident will develop Game Invest further,” says Peter Levin, CEO and founder of Goodbye Kansas AB.

THQ Nordic’s indirectly wholly owned subsidiary Koch Media GmbH, Höfen, has acquired the Milan-based Milestone s.r.l., a game developer and publisher behind successful racing games like MotoGP and Supercross. The acquisition includes the development studio and all intellectual property rights.

“Becoming a part of the Koch Media Family is an important step for our studio. Being run as a family business, which is built on the enthusiasm of its team members and centered around racing games, we are delighted to bring our expertise and knowledge into the company group and strive from the experience and knowledge outside of our core DNA. We are sure that the combination of our experiences will strengthen our position in our market segment and help us to bring more exciting games to our fans and extend the frontiers of racing within the gaming industry,“ says Luisa Bixio, Vice President Milestone s.r.l.

Dr. Klemens Kundratitz, CEO Koch Media GmbH adds: “We are delighted to welcome the team from Milestone to the family. After a long relationship in distribution across selected Koch territories, I am sure that the combined knowledge of our companies will open amazing new opportunities within a core market of the games industry. I am more than confident that the motivation and passion that drives the team at Milestone and the strong value within the racing segment are a solid foundation for future projects. The knowledge of fully licensed titles such as MotoGP and the experience in self-publishing and developing own IPs such as RIDE, rooting on a core DNA which centers around racing will help us to broaden our group portfolio and strengthen us for the future.”

Milestone has produced racing games such as Screamer for Virgin, the Superbike series for Electronic Arts, and WRC for Black Bean to name but a few. Milestone started its own publishing business for licensed IPs and games with the MotoGP series and 2013 marked the entry of the MXGP series. The company launched its first own franchise Ride in 2015, adding the official Monster Energy Supercross series in 2018. The current line-up is built around the three yearly franchises MotoGP, Supercross and MXGP as well as the bi-yearly release of the owned IP Ride.
