Mahoney served as second unit director on J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, making her the first woman and first Black woman to direct a Star Wars film.
The screenplay for the sequel is written by Greg Rucka, who created the graphic novel series of the same name with Leandro Fernández. Rucka is also executive producing.
The Old Guard sequel producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger for Skydance; Charlize Theron, Beth Kono and AJ Dix for Denver and Delilah; Marc Evans for Marc Evans Productions; and Gina Prince-Bythewood.
“Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard. I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement – being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses,” said Mahoney.
She added: “Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences. Warmly tipping my hat to the world Gina, Charlize, Rucka, Fernández, Skydance, Netflix, Marc Evans Productions, Denver & Delilah Films and the entire Team daringly put forward.”
Charlize Theron, Beth Kono and AJ Dix of Denver & Delilah Films said: “We are beyond thrilled that Vic is joining The Old Guard team. Her passion for these characters and her ambitious vision for the movie overwhelmed us all. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with her.”
Gina Prince-Bythewood commented: “I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre. I have decided not to direct the sequel, but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter.”
In the first movie, a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries (led by Theron’s warrior named Andy) with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries.
When the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.
The Old Guard, which was released on July 10, 2020, is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.
You can read the first issue of The Old Guard online for free at Image Comics. It’s officially described as follows:
Eisner-winning writer Greg Rucka (Lazarus, Black Magick, Wonder Woman) and critically acclaimed artist Leandro Fernández (The Discipline, Deadpool, Punisher: MAX) team up together to introduce The Old Guard, the story of old soldiers who never die…and yet cannot seem to fade away.
Trapped in an immortality without explanation, Andromache of Scythia—“Andy”—and her comrades ply their trade for those who can find—and aff ord—their services. But in the 21st century, immortality is a hard secret to keep, and when you live long enough, you learn that there are many fates worse than death.
The first film was rated R for sequences of graphic violence, and language.
