Today, Netflix has released the trailer for The Hand of God (È stata la mano di Dio), Italy’s official submission for the International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. You can check out the trailer for The Hand of God in the player below.
The film will be released in select theaters on December 3 and on the streaming service on December 15, 2021. The Hand of God was written and directed by Academy Award winner Paolo Sorrentino.
The producers include Lorenzo Mieli and Sorrentino for The Apartment, A Fremantle Company. The cast includes Filippo Scotti, Toni Servillo, Teresa Saponangelo, Marlon Joubert, Luisa Ranieri, Renato Carpentieri, Massimiliano Gallo, Betti Pedrazzi, Biagio Manna, Ciro Capano, Enzo Decaro, Lino Musella and Sofya Gershevich.
From Academy Award-winning writer and director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty), comes the story of a young man’s heartbreak and liberation in 1980s Naples, Italy. The Hand of God follows Fabietto Schisa, an awkward Italian teen whose life and vibrant, eccentric family are suddenly upended—first by the electrifying arrival of soccer legend Diego Maradona and then by a shocking accident from which Maradona inadvertently saves Fabietto, setting his future in motion.
Sorrentino returns to his hometown to tell his most personal story, a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss.

The Hand of God represents for the first time in my career an intimate and personal film, a novel of formation at once light-hearted and painful. I’m delighted to partake in this adventure with producer Lorenzo Mieli, his company The Apartment and Netflix,” said Paulo Sorrentino.

Sorrentino’s first full-length feature film, 2001’s One Man Up, was selected for the Venice Film Festival. In 2004, Paulo Sorrentino directed The Consequences of Love and in 2006 The Family Friend, which were both in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2008, with Il Divo, he returned to Cannes winning the Jury Prize. He returned in competition at the Cannes Festival in 2011 with This Must be the Place and two years later with The Great Beauty, which won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe and the BAFTA Award for best Foreign Language Film, as well as three EFA Awards.
He was selected once again in competition at Cannes in 2016 with Youth, garnering three EFA Awards, an Academy Award nomination and two Golden Globe nominations. In 2016, he created and directed the TV series The Young Pope, nominated at the Golden Globes for Best Actor and at the Emmy Awards for Outstanding Production Design and Outstanding Cinematography. In 2018, he directed the movie Loro starring Toni Servillo and in 2019 Sorrentino directed the second series set in the world of modern papacy, The New Pope, starring Jude Law and John Malkovich.
