Netflix today brought online the official trailer for The Chair, the upcoming series starring Sandra Oh. The trailer features “Oh!” by The Linda Lindas, the follow-up track to their performance of “Racist, Sexist Boy.”
Consisting of six 30-minute episodes, The Chair will launch on the streaming service Friday, August 20. The show is part of the Netflix August 2021 lineup.
The Chair follows Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh) as she navigates her new role as the Chair of the English department at prestigious Pembroke University.
Ji-Yoon is faced with a unique set of challenges as the first woman to chair the department, and as one of the few staff members of color at the university.
The older staff fear change, while new blood, like professor Yasmin McKay (Nana Mensah), agitate for it.
Ji-Yoon tries to juggle her new administrative responsibilities – clashing with close co-workers who were confidants before she became the boss – with motherhood to her young daughter Ju Ju (Everly Carginilla) and caretaking for her father Habi (Ji Yong Lee).
Simultaneously she is struggling to discern if her platonic relationship with beloved English professor Bill Dobson (Jay Duplass) is becoming something more and, if it even should.
When Bill is captured on video making a controversial gesture the student body erupts into a call for accountability and Ji-Yoon’s ride gets even wilder as work, romance, drama and comedy collide in this layered, multi-faceted tale also starring Holland Taylor, Bob Balaban, and David Morse.
Amanda Peet is executive producer, writer and showrunner of The Chair. Joining Peet as executive producers are Sandra Oh, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Bernie Caulfield and Daniel Gray Longino.
The writers are Peet, along with Annie Julia Wyman, Richard E. Robbins, Jennifer Kim and Andrea Troyer. The director of all episodes is Daniel Gray Longino.
Los Angeles-based, all-female punk band The Linda Lindas have released their highly-anticipated new single “Oh!” The track follows the band’s viral track “Racist, Sexist Boy,” which has amassed over four million views on Instagram, and earned major praise from the likes of Hayley Williams, Questlove, Flea, and members of Sonic Youth.
The Linda Lindas are Eloise (Age 13; vocals, bass), Mila (Age 10; vocals, drums), Bela (Age 16; vocals, guitar), and Lucia (Age 14; vocals, guitar).
Formed in 2018, The Linda Lindas first played together when former Dum Dum Girls frontwoman Kristin Kontrol invited them to take the stage to play covers for Girlschool LA (a music and ideas festival focused on connecting and empowering women-identified artists, leaders, and voices). After forming their own band and playing DIY gigs around Los Angeles, they were asked to open for punk icon Alice Bag and for seminal riot grrrl band Bikini Kill at the Hollywood Palladium.
In time, the band began writing their own material, including a song featured in the Netflix documentary The Claudia Kishi Club (2020), self-released their debut EP, and appeared in Amy Poehler’s Moxie!
