Reynolds’ character, Adam Reed, is a time traveler from 2050 on a rescue mission to search for the woman he loves, Laura (played by Zoe Saldana). Adam’s ship is damaged, however, and he is sent back to 2022.

He finds his way home in that time and encounters the 12-year-old version of himself, played by Walker Scobell, his mother (Jennifer Garner), and his father (Mark Ruffalo). The film also stars Catherine Keener.

“I haven’t personally done a movie that reflects my life the way The Adam Project does,” Reynolds said about the movie.

Levy added: “Ryan and I aimed to combine a heightened time travel premise with grounded and relatable characters and themes. We talk a lot about wish fulfillment being so critical to the movies we love and to the movies we want to make.”

The writers of the Netflix release include Jonathan Tropper, T.S. Nowlin, Jennifer Flackett, and Mark Levin. The producers are David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Shawn Levy, and Ryan Reynolds.
