Taika Waititi to Write and Direct Thor 4, Akira Put on Hold

Taika Waititi is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to write and direct Thor 4, the follow-up to his blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

However, the site also says that Warner Bros. Pictures’ Akira adaptation, which Waititi is attached to write and direct as well, is being put on pause indefinitely as the two projects’ production dates started getting too close to each other. Akira will be based on the Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo.

Warner Bros. had previously scheduled a May 21, 2021 release date for the film. THR adds that Warner Bros. hopes Waititi will pick up Akira after Thor 4.

Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok earned an impressive $853.9 million at the worldwide box office in 2017. $315 million of the total came from domestic theaters and $538.9 million from international markets.

In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his home world and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela (Cate Blanchett). But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) – and grapple with his silver-tongued adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the fierce warrior Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and the eccentric Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum).

Of course, Avengers: Endgame saw Thor joining his fellow Avengers to take down Thanos. He then appoints Valkyrie as the new ruler of New Asgard and joins the Guardians of the Galaxy, who will go on a quest to look for Gamora.

Waititi also played Korg in both Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame.

Waititi’s next film is JoJo Rabbit, which opens in theaters on October 18 and stars Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Waititi, Thomasin McKenzie, and Roman Griffin Davis.
