Sylvester Stallone Joins James Gunn’s Suicide Squad

-

James Gunn revealed today on his social channels that Sylvester Stallone has joined the cast of The Suicide Squad, which is scheduled for an August 6, 2021 release.

“Always love working with my friend Sylvester Stallone & our work today on The Suicide Squad was no exception,” the filmmaker said. “Despite Sly being an iconic movie star, most people still don’t have any idea what an amazing actor this guy is.”

Gunn previously worked together with Sylvester Stallone on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which the actor played Stakar Ogord. In the Marvel Studios sequel, Ogord holds a grudge against Yondu, played by Michael Rooker.

Gunn has said before that it was their plan for Stallone to appear in more Marvel Studios films, but fans will get to see him in a DC movie first instead. It is unknown at this time who he plays in The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad cast includes Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Colonel Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, and Idris Elba as Bloodsport.

Also appearing are Steve Agee as King Shark, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and John Cena as Peacemaker.

Charles Roven and Peter Safran are producing the feature film. Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder serve as executive producers.

Suicide Squad, which was released in August 2016, cost about $175 million and grossed an impressive $746.8 million worldwide.

The spinoff Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) also opened in theaters on February 7, 2020. Directed by Cathy Yan, the movie has grossed $178.4 million worldwide, with $74.7 million coming from North America and $103.7 million from overseas markets.

Margot Robbie reprised the role of Harley Quinn in the film and was joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra “Cass” Cain, and Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis.

HBO Max also previously announced the streaming service will explore the origins of the Peacemaker character, the master of weapons from upcoming The Suicide Squad, in the new Max Original action-adventure-comedy series Peacemaker. HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order of eight episodes for the first season of the show.

John Cena will reprise his role from The Suicide Squad movie to star in the series, and James Gunn will write all eight episodes of Peacemaker and will direct multiple episodes, including the first.

Also starring are Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black, The Color Purple on Broadway) as Leota Adebayo, Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day, HBO’s Perry Mason) as Auggie Smith, Jennifer Holland (Brightburn, American Horror Story), who will reprise her role of Emilia Harcourt from The Suicide Squad, and Chris Conrad (Perpetual Grace, LTD., Patriot) as Vigilante/Adrian Chase.

While details about Peacemaker are being kept under wraps, the series will explore the origins of the character that Cena will play in the upcoming film, a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. Gunn and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran will serve as executive producers of the series, with Cena as co-executive producer.

Based on characters from DC, Peacemaker will be produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television. Peacemaker is scheduled to begin production in early 2021, prior to Gunn beginning work on the next Guardians of the Galaxy film.
