Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment are developing a Supergirl movie, according to Deadline. The script is being written by Oren Uziel (upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog, The Cloverfield Paradox, 22 Jump Street). The site says that not much more is known about the project.
Supergirl is played by Melissa Benoist on the successful series on The CW. That show is already heading into Season 4. Fans of the TV series will undoubtedly want Melissa Benoist to play the role on the big screen as well, but the chances of that happening are slim. Take The Flash, for example, who is played by Grant Gustin in the popular TV series but Ezra Miller portrayed the character in Justice League.
The announcement is surprising considering fans were expecting a Man of Steel sequel news at some point soon. Whether Henry Cavill, who is currently in theaters with Mission: Impossible – Fallout and recently appeared as Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, would make an appearance, is unclear right now.
The site added that there is no producer on the Supergirl movie at this point.
Supergirl was previously turned into a 1984 film by TriStar Pictures. Starring Helen Slater in the title role, the movie was directed by Jeannot Szwarc and written by David Odell. In Supergirl, Marc McClure reprised his role as Jimmy Olsen from the Superman films.
