New updates on Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO, HBO Max, and Netflix programming have come in today. Below, you can check out news on Splinter Cell, Once on This Island, One Night in Miami, On the Trail, Invisible Stories, and The Vow.

Splinter Cell (Netflix)

Netflix and Ubisoft are teaming up for an adult animated series adaptation of the video game series Splinter Cell, according to Variety. John Wick films’ Derek Kolstad will write and executive produce the series. The trade says that the Splinter Cell series has already received a two-season, 16-episode order from the streaming service.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell is an award-winning stealth action video game series that has sold more than 31 million copies since its debut in 2002. Splinter Cell follows protagonist Sam Fisher, a highly-trained special operative in a fictional black-ops sub-division, “Echelon.” Sam Fisher and the agents of Echelon utilize combat skills, weapons and cutting-edge gadgets to neutralize international terrorist threats and rogue forces in modern, realistic stories ripped from the headlines.

Once on This Island

Once on This Island (Disney+)

Following the success of the Hamilton launch on the streaming service, The Hollywood Reporter says that Disney+ is developing Once on This Island, a feature adaptation of the 1990 Broadway musical. Playwright Jocelyn Bioh, director Wanuri Kahiu and producer Marc Platt are behind the adaptation, based on the Rosa Guy novel, My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl.

Once on This Island is the sweeping, universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world, and ready to risk it all for love. Guided by the mighty island gods, Ti Moune sets out on a remarkable journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.

One Night in Miami

One Night in Miami (Amazon Prime Video)

Amazon Studios has acquired worldwide rights to Oscar-winning actress Regina King’s feature directorial debut, One Night in Miami, written by Olivier-nominated Kemp Powers, based off his 2013 stage play. The producers are Jess Wu Calder and Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment (Blindspotting, Anomalisa) and Jody Klein of ABKCO (The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus). King and Powers are the executive producers.

Set on the night of February 25, 1964, the story follows a young Cassius Clay (before he became Muhammad Ali) as he emerges from the Miami Beach Convention Center the new World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Against all odds, he defeated Sonny Liston and shocked the sports world. While crowds of people swarm Miami Beach to celebrate the match, Clay – unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws – instead spends the night at the Hampton House Motel in one of Miami’s historically black neighborhoods celebrating with three of his closest friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football star Jim Brown. The next morning, the four men emerge determined to define a new world for themselves and their people.

In One Night in Miami, Powers explores what happened during these pivotal hours through the dynamic relationship between the four men and the way their friendship, paired with their shared struggles, fueled their path to becoming the civil rights icons they are today.

“One Night in Miami beautifully captures a significant moment in history when these great minds gathered and ultimately helped shape the conversation of what we know today as the civil rights movement,” said Head of Amazon Studios’ Jennifer Salke. “Regina King is a force of nature – mastering her craft in front of the camera as we’ve seen in her extensive body of work, and now taking her talent behind the camera. We’re so proud to welcome Regina and Kemp to the Amazon family.”

King said, “Amazon’s enthusiasm for One Night in Miami is both humbling and exciting. I am honored to have them as partners on my feature film directorial debut.”

Amazon Studios is planning to release One Night in Miami later in the year with an eye towards the awards corridor. ABKCO will release the official One Night in Miami original soundtrack album in conjunction with the film.

On the Trail

On the Trail (HBO Max)

As the American presidential campaign intensifies, HBO Max and CNN Films will take viewers on a journey following a team of female journalists as they report on the presidential election that will define a generation. On the Trail will premiere Thursday, August 6.

The cinema verité feature reveals the lives and personal grit of veteran journalists and intrepid first-timers, Dana Bash, Kaitlan Collins, Jessica Dean, Daniella Diaz, Annie Grayer, Kyung Lah, MJ Lee, Abby Phillip, Arlette Saenz, and Jasmine Wright, against the backdrop of the volatile 2020 race. Beginning just days prior to the Iowa caucuses, viewers see the journalists pack up and leave their families to fan out across the country, to report on the president and his would-be rivals, as the candidates launch (and end) campaigns, and contend for voters.

The film is punctuated with intimate interviews with these journalists, detailing the lives they put on pause back home. They bring their training and life perspectives to the job, while demonstrating what it takes to be a top political reporter in the arena.

Invisible Stories (HBO & HBO Max)

HBO Asia presents Invisible Stories, a six-episode half-hour anthology drama that explores the triumph and tragedy of migrant workers living in Sungai Merah, one of Singapore’s public housing communities. Each thirty-minute episode dives into the struggles of an array of characters, ranging from a construction worker longing to create his own home, to an aspiring social media influencer willing to capture anything in exchange for fame, to a spiritualistic cab driver dealing with his own demons, and more.

Equal parts gritty and tender, Invisible Stories dives into the less glamorous side of Singapore, providing a much-needed voice to the unsung pillars of the city. All six episodes will be available on Monday, August 3 in the U.S. and will be available to stream on HBO and HBO Max.

Golden Horse Award winner Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season and ILO ILO) and Taiwanese newcomer Devin Pan appear in the first episode. Veteran Singapore actor Wang Yu Qing (Hello From The Other Side and Reach For The Skies) plays the taxi driver in the second episode.

The Vow (HBO & HBO Max)

HBO documentary series The Vow, exploring the NXIVM organization, from Academy Award-nominated, Emmy-winning directors Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer (The Great Hack, The Square, Control Room) debuts Sunday, August 23. The documentary series will be available on HBO and to stream on HBO Max.

The Vow follows a range of people who joined the self-improvement group, NXIVM. The organization has been under siege, with various charges including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy brought against its highest members – most notably founder Keith Raniere, who was convicted in June 2019 and is currently awaiting sentencing. The series takes a deep, nuanced look at the experiences of a number of people deeply involved in NXIVM over the course of several years.

Amidst claims by NXIVM participants of both profound transformation and devastating abuse, the series, like Noujaim and Amer’s previous films, seeks to reveal the issues behind the headlines and explore the emotional toll of unfolding events on these individuals.
