Streaming News: Black Beauty, The Girls I’ve Been, Nine Perfect Strangers & More

-

Disney+, Hulu, Netflix and YouTube have made some exciting announcements the last few days about what is coming to their streaming platforms. Below, you can learn about Black Beauty, Captain Fall, The Girls I’ve Been, Nine Perfect Strangers, and Could You Survive the Movies?

Black Beauty (Disney+)

Disney+ announced that Black Beauty, a contemporary adaptation of Anna Sewell’s classic 19th century novel (buy at Amazon), will premiere on the streaming service later this year. Black Beauty is a wild mustang born free in the American west. When she is captured and taken away from family, her story intertwines with that of 17-year old Jo Green, similarly grieving over the loss of her parents. The two slowly develop a bond that is built on love, respect and mutual healing.

Black Beauty features Oscar winner Kate Winslet (The Reader) as the voice of Black Beauty and stars Mackenzie Foy (Interstellar) as Jo Green; Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) as John Manly; and Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black) as Mrs. Winthorp.

Black Beauty is directed by Ashley Avis (Adolescence‘) who also wrote the screenplay. JB Pictures’ Jeremy Bolt (Polar, Monster Hunter) and Robert Kulzer (Polar) from Constantin Film are producers and Martin Moszkowicz, Edward Winters and Jon Brown are executive producers.

Dylan Tarason is a co-producer, and Moonlighting Films president Genevieve Hofmeyr (Mad Max: Fury Road) is the South African producer. Black Beauty is produced by Constantin Film and JB Pictures.

Captain Fall (Netflix)

Netflix is expanding its relationship with Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen with a new animated comedy series titled Captain Fall. Helgaker and Torgersen are the creators behind the Norwegian comedy series Norsemen, which premiered its third on Netflix earlier this month. Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the series that will be released in two parts.

The creative pairs’ next project with Netflix will follow Jonathan Fall, a naive warm-hearted ship captain who finds himself unknowingly the captain of a smuggling ship. Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen will serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers on the series. Joel Trussell (Electric City, Pickle and Peanut) will serve as executive producer.

Jon Iver and Jonas said: “We are thrilled to set out on this new adventure with Netflix. We first pitched Captain Fall as a live action show, but Netflix saw the potential of it being animated. Although a bit scary in the beginning, moving from live action to animation just feels amazingly limitless and creative on a whole new level. And luckily Netflix has surrounded us with a groups of extremely talented people, so everything is set up for us not screwing this one up. But you never know.”

Mike Moon, head of adult animation for Netflix, added: “Jon Iver and Jonas created a hilarious story in Norsemen that connected with audiences all around the world. We can’t wait for fans to see their absurd fantastical genius come to life in their first animated series.”

The Girls I’ve Been (Netflix)

Netflix is adapting Tess Sharpe’s novel The Girls I’ve Been into a feature film. Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) is attached to star and produce. Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman will also produce for Aggregate Films.

The Girls I’ve Been is a twisty, exhilarating thriller centering around a con artist, Nora, who must use her powers of persuasion and impersonation to get herself, her girlfriend, and ex-boyfriend free during a hostage situation at a bank.

The novel will be published by Penguin Random House early next year.

Nine Perfect Strangers

Nine Perfect Strangers (Hulu)

Jonathan Levine will direct all eight episodes of the Hulu limited series Nine Perfect Strangers, starring Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Samara Weaving, Luke Evans, Melvin Gregg, Grace Van Patten and Tiffany Boone. Levine will also executive produce alongside Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky and Jodi Matterson for Made Up Stories, Kidman and Per Saari for Blossom Films, Liane Moriarty, David E. Kelley, John Henry Butterworth and McCarthy. Levine’s producing partner Gillian Bohrer will also serve as producer on the show.

The project reunites Levine and Papandrea, who previously worked together on the feature film adaptation of the novel Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion for Lionsgate, which opened to both mass critical and commercial acclaim in 2013, and has grossed over $115 million worldwide.

The limited series, which is based off of Liane Moriarty’s latest book of the same name, is co-written by Kelley, John Henry Butterworth and Samantha Strauss and co-showrun by Kelley and Butterworth.

Nine Perfect Strangers, which is eyeing a 2021 release, takes place at a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation as nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living. Watching over them during this ten-day retreat is the resort’s director Masha (Kidman), a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies.

Could You Survive the Movies?

Could You Survive the Movies? (YouTube Originals)

YouTube Originals has renewed Could You Survive the Movies? for a second season. Hosted by YouTube Creator Jake Roper and produced by AMPLE Entertainment, the YouTube Originals learning series has accrued over 70 million views since launching in October 2019.

“The team on this series is nothing short of exceptional and we’re so glad they’re getting the recognition they deserve,” said Ari Mark and Phil Lott, co-founders of AMPLE Entertainment. “Hats off to YouTube for their very real commitment to content that intersects entertainment with education. AMPLE is proud to be a part of their mission.”

“We are honored that the Television Academy has recognized ‘Could You Survive The Movies?’ as a best in class series,” said Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content for YouTube Originals. “Jake has brought this series to life through his passion for cinema and science, and I can’t wait for fans to see what he has in store for season 2.”

Could You Survive The Movies? is produced by AMPLE Entertainment and hosted by Jake Roper of the VSauce3 channel, who accepted the win during the virtual livestream ceremony from his home. Across the six episodes, Jake and his team of EduTubers dove into these worlds through immersive recreations that blended unscripted scientific exploration with narrative storytelling. Each mind-blowing experiment transported viewers and investigated the science of their favorite films, all while attempting to answer the important question: could you survive the movies? The new six-episode second season, launching in early 2021, will tackle the science of magic in Harry Potter, the power of water in Titanic, the science of sound and acoustics behind A Quiet Place, and more.

Ari Mark, Phil Lott, Jake Roper and David Brown are Executive Producers. Susanne Daniels is Global Head of Original Content for YouTube. Nadine Zylstra, Head of Learning for YouTube Originals along with Zoe Di Stefano on the Learning Development team will oversee the series.
