Spiderhead Soundtrack

“Joseph Kosinski’s visionary filmmaking has always demanded equally distinctive music, and I’m thrilled to reunite with Joe on Spiderhead,” said Joseph Trapanese.

“From the moment I read George Saunders’ unforgettable short story and Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s gripping screenplay, I was haunted by the sound of choirs, cellos, and bass clarinets and immediately set to writing music for Abnesti’s laboratory.”

He added: “Thanks to Joe, editor Stephen Mirrione, and music editor Bryan Lawson, these original ideas, along with the unexpected song choices, became the sonic fabric of the Spiderhead. I’m honored to share the score along with these original sketches on this album release from Netflix Music.”

Director Joseph Kosinski said: “The music for Spiderhead had to express more emotions than you can fit in a MobiPak, and Joe absolutely delivered. His score is as innovative and distinct as George Saunders’ story.”

Redemption

In a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), inmates wear a surgically attached device that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits.

In Spiderhead, incarcerated volunteers are free to be themselves. Until they’re not. At times, they’re a better version. Need to lighten up? There’s a drug for that. At a loss for words? There’s a drug for that, too.

But when two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection, their path to redemption takes a twistier turn as Abnesti’s experiments start to push the limits of free will altogether.

Based on The New Yorker short story by George Saunders, Spiderhead is a genre-bending and darkly funny psychological thriller produced by Eric Newman, Chris Hemsworth, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Agnes Chu, Geneva Wasserman, Tommy Harper, and Jeremy Steckler.

Joseph Trapanese began his film scoring career as the key collaborator on some of the most memorable scores of recent cinema history – as arranger and orchestrator for Daft Punk’s TRON: Legacy, co-composer, arranger, orchestrator, and conductor for M83’s Oblivion, and co-composer and co-producer with Mike Shinoda for The Raid series.

Known for integrating his extensive classical training with his skill in producing electronic music, he has crafted uniquely hybrid and inventive scores for a number of films, including Nicolas Cage’s genre-bending Sundance selection Prisoners of the Ghostland, Disney’s 2019 live-action remake Lady and the Tramp, Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista’s buddy cop action-comedy Stuber, Mads Mikkelson’s Cannes selection Arctic, Universal’s landmark rap biopic Straight Outta Compton, and the second and third installments of the Divergent series, Insurgent and Allegiant.

In addition, he has leaned his innovative sound to Netflix’s The Witcher (for which he also writes original songs, including the viral hit “Burn, Butcher, Burn”), the critically-acclaimed original series Shadow and Bone, and interactive projects for Disney Interactive, EA, Lucasfilm, and Ubisoft.

He has continued to work as a collaborator on projects including The Greatest Showman (song producer and score co-composer), as well as album projects and live events with Aloe Blacc, Amon Tobin, Dierks Bentley, Dr. Dre, The Glitch Mob, Haim, Halsey, Janelle Monae, Kelly Clarkson, Kendrick Lamar, Moby, S. Carey, Sohn, Zedd, and many more. As a conductor, Joseph has appeared with The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, AUKSO Poland, and numerous festival and studio orchestras.
