AMC Networks’ Shudder has announced the movie and TV highlights for next month. In addition to the Shudder September 2020 lineup, the streaming service is going all out by turning their normal 31 Days of Halloween into 61 Days of Halloween.
The Halloween schedule includes weekly original/exclusive movie premieres; a new The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs Halloween special; a collection of unforgettable chillers from the “master of mayhem,” Vincent Price; a third installment of holiday favorite The Ghoul Log; the return of the Shudder Halloween Hotline; and 61 days of daily recommendations from Shudder curator Sam Zimmerman.
“We usually call October our ‘Super Bowl month’ but this year we’re starting on Sept. 1, so the 61 Days of Halloween will be our Super Bowl combined with Mardi Gras and Christmas,” said Craig Engler, Shudder’s General Manager.
“We start on day one with one of the biggest horror movies of the year, Nicolas Cage in Richard Stanley’s mind-bending Color Out of Space — no less than the best cinematic adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft ever — and roll on through to Halloween with a big premiere every week. And then we’re going to finish October with a surprise that will have horror fans everywhere talking.”
The streaming service today also announced it has acquired three female-forward horror films screening at this week’s virtual Fantasia International Film Festival. Vincent Paronnaud’s Hunted and Elza Kephart’s Slaxx will have their world premieres, while Natasha Kermani’s Lucky – previously set to premiere at the canceled SXSW festival — will celebrate its international premiere as part of the Canadian geo-locked event.
Lucky, starring Brea Grant (After Midnight, Heroes), is a surreal feminist thriller that follows a self-help book author who suddenly finds herself stalked by an elusive and dangerous man and becomes caught in a struggle to regain control over her life.
The horror-comedy Slaxx is the third feature from Canadian director Elza Kephart, who co-wrote with Patricia Gomez Zlatar, and stars Romane Denis. In the film, a possessed pair of jeans is brought to life to punish the unscrupulous practices of a trendy clothing company. Shipped to the company’s flagship store, Slaxx proceeds to wreak carnage on staff locked in overnight to set up the new collection.
Directed by acclaimed French filmmaker and comic artist Vincent Paronnaud, co-director of Cannes Jury Prize and Academy Award nominee Persepolis, and co-written by him and Léa Pernollet, Hunted is an exhilarating, transcendent take on survival horror that blends primal violence with the timeless quality of myth and fairytale. The film stars Lucie Debay as Eve, a woman who encounters a seemingly charming man (Arieh Worthalter) at a bar, only to uncover his true sociopathic nature, sparking a dire, life-or-death chase through the wilderness.
