20th Century Fox has given the green light to Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, which means that Shawn Levy will be dropping out as director of the Uncharted movie in order to take on the action comedy. So it sounds like Nathan Fillion will be our live-action Nathan Drake for a little longer, though Tom Holland remains attached to star in the Sony Pictures video game adaptation.
The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says that Free Guy has also cast Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Lil Rel (Get Out), and Joe Keery (Stranger Things). Filming is scheduled to start in April 2019.
In Free Guy, a bank teller stuck in his routine discovers he’s a background character in a rather brutal open world, action-adventure video game and he is the only one capable of saving his world. He’ll get help of an avatar, played by Comer, whose name is Molotov Girl. In the real world, she is a mousy programmer who actually created the game but was devastated when it was stolen from her.
The trade adds that Rel is Reynolds’s best friend and fellow Non-Playable Character who doesn’t believe his friend’s seemingly outlandish claims. Keery is a programmer who may or may not have a secret agenda.
Written by Matt Lieberman, the film will be executive produced by George Dewey. Mike Ireland is overseeing for 20th Century Fox.
Berlanti Productions’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are producing alongside Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, Levy’s 21 Laps, and Adam Kolbrenner. George Dewey is executive producing.
