Sharkboy and Lavagirl Return in Netflix’s We Can Be Heroes

Robert Rodriguez announced today announced that Sharkboy and Lavagirl will return in the upcoming film We Can Be Heroes, coming to Netflix on January 1, 2021.

“Sharkboy and Lavagirl are back! And they’ve had a kid. Introducing…Guppy! We Can Be Heroes releases on Netflix on New Year’s Day,” the filmmaker said.

In the film, written and directed by Rodriguez, when alien invaders kidnap Earth’s superheroes, their children must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world.

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D opened in theaters in the summer of 2005 and featured Taylor Lautner as Sharkboy and Taylor Dooley as Lavagirl. The film grossed $72 million at the worldwide box office. Dooley is returning for We Can Be Heroes but Lautner is not reprising the role.

The We Can Be Heroes cast also includes Christian Slater (Mr. RobotThe Wife), YaYa Gosselin (FBI Most WantedThe Purge), Akira Akbar (Captain MarvelThis Is Us), Andrew Diaz, Andy Walken (The Kids Are AlrightA Christmas Story Live!), and Boyd Holbrook (Logan).

Also starring are Hala Finley (Man with a PlanBackroads) Isaiah Russell-Bailey (Family ReunionSWAT), Lotus Blossom (Magic Max), Lyon Daniels (Patriot), and Nathan Blair (Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever.).

Sung Kang (Fast & Furious: Tokyo DriftBetter Luck Tomorrow), Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird BoxWaco), Adriana Barraza (Dora and the Lost City of GoldBabelCakePenny Dreadful) and Christopher McDonald (Mr. IglesiasWetlands) appear as well.

The cast is rounded out by Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, NarcosWonder Woman 1984), and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas (Isn’t It RomanticBaywatch).

Rodriguez, who is also producing, has previous experience with the action-adventure drama. He previously directed, wrote, and produced Spy Kids, which went on to become a major movie franchise.

Rodriguez also directed The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, a superhero-kid film intended for the same audience as his Spy Kids franchise.

Rodriguez’s credits also include DesperadoFrom Dusk Till DawnSin CityMacheteSin City: A Dame to Kill For, and Alita: Battle Angel.
