Shang-Chi Production Delayed Due to Coronavirus

Marvel Studios has shut down the Shang-Chi production due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Australian crew was informed that first-unit Shang-Chi production was suspended as director Destin Daniel Cretton awaits results of a COVID-19 test.

“As many of you know, Destin, our director, has a new born baby. He wanted to exercise additional caution given the current environment and decided to get tested for Covid-19 today,” said a note to the crew.

“He is currently self-isolating under the recommendation of his doctor. While he waits for the results of the test, we are suspending 1st unit production in an abundance of caution until he gets the results this coming week. Second unit and off production will continue as normal. We will reach out to everyone by Tuesday for the latest update.

“This is an unprecedented time. We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we work through this.”

The film’s star, Simu Liu, posted a note on his social channels about the Shang-Chi production:

“Per the news you’ve no doubt read online, our main unit is going to take a couple days off while some people on our staff undergo precautionary testing. I’m super grateful to work for a company that is proactive, cautious and empathetic during this difficult time.

“Everyone is in good spirits as we continue to work towards making an incredible film!
Stay safe out there, wash your hands, and – of course – don’t be racist!”

Destin Daniel Cretton previously worked with Captain Marvel star Brie Larson on both Short Term 12 (2013) and The Glass Castle (2017), and with Black Panther‘s Michael B. Jordan on Just Mercy.

The film, carrying the full title of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, also stars Awkwafina and Tony Leung. It is scheduled to open on February 12, 2021.

Chinese-American writer Dave Callaham is on script duty. Callaham is known for co-writing Wonder Woman 1984 with Geoff Johns and Patty Jenkins. He’s also working on the recently-announced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.

Shang-Chi was first seen in Special Marvel Edition #15 in 1973 and was created by Steven Engelhart and Jim Starlin. Shang-Chi fights unarmed, as well as with weapons like a gun, nunchaku and jian in the wushu style. He can also create duplicates of himself.

Shang-Chi is the son of Fu Manchu and was trained by his father and his father’s instructors in martial arts, eventually realizing that Fu Manchu isn’t a good man. Shang-Chi has also been an Avenger.

Shang-Chi has worked with Iron Fist, The Thing, Spider-Man, Black Widow and Nick Fury, setting the character in a perfect position to join the team as Marvel Studios moves into its next phase. He’s also been a member of Heroes for Hire.
