Scott Derrickson Exits Doctor Strange 2 Due to Creative Differences

-

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson won’t be back for the sequel after all. On his social channels, the director has announced that he and Marvel Studios have parted ways.

“Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences,” he says, adding, “I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as [Executive Producer].

Derrickson directed and co-wrote the first film, which grossed $677.7 million worldwide in 2016 on a budget of $165 million.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be back for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is still scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2021. Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor are likely to return as well. The Doctor Strange sequel was expected to begin filming this spring.

It was also previously announced that Elizabeth Olsen will appear as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. WandaVision, the Disney+ series that Olsen will star in, connects directly to the feature-film storyline.

Marvel StudiosDoctor Strange is the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange, whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place—a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange—armed with newly acquired magical powers—is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
