Ryan Murphy to Direct Prom Musical for Netflix with Meryl Streep and More

Ryan Murphy is set to direct and produce a Netflix feature adaptation of the Tony-nominated musical Prom, according to Deadline. The musical will star Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Ariana Grande, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key and Andrew Rannells. The site reports that sources say the film will begin in December, and will release in theaters before it airs on Netflix. This is part of Murphy’s overall deal with the streaming service.

In Prom, Streep and Corden play Tony winner Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman respectively. They’re working on a “flop musical” about Eleanor Roosevelt. The musical is reviewed badly, and they team up with Broadway actors Angie Dickinson (Kidman) and Trent Oliver (Rannells) to “champion a cause to rehabilitate their careers.” They also team up with gay student, Emma, who isn’t allowed to go to her prom in Indiana.

Grande will play Alyssa, a popular student, and Awkwafina will play a publicist, while Key will play Streep’s love interest/Principal Hawkins. The role of Emma is being cast from a nationwide search.

Producing prom are Murphy, Alexis Woodall, Bill Damaschke and Dori Berinstein. The script comes to us from Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin with music and lyrics from Beguelin and Matthew Sklar, based o Jack Viertel’s original concept. The soundtrack will be produced by Grande and Murphy with Scooter Braun.

What do you think of Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden and the rest joining the cast of Prom? Let us know in the comments.
