Constantin Film has hired 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts to write and direct their Resident Evil reboot, according to Variety. The Resident Evil reboot is expected to begin production in 2019.
The new film was announced in May 2017 with James Wan attached to produce. The original screenplay was written by Greg Russo (Mortal Kombat). Constantin Film is producing alongside Wan’s Atomic Monster.
When the project was announced, Constantin was said to be planning six new films with an all-new cast. According to the trade, the revival of the franchise is a high priority for Constantin Film.
Based on Capcom’s video games, the Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich have earned over $1.2 billion worldwide to date, making it the highest-grossing film series based on a video game. The most recent film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, earned $312.2 million worldwide in early 2017 on a budget of just $40 million.
Roberts is currently working on the sequel 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter. His credits also include Strangers: Prey at Night and The Other Side of the Door.
