Netflix has released the first Rebecca photos, which preview the upcoming thriller starring Lily James, Armie Hammer, and Kristin Scott Thomas. Directed by Ben Wheatley (High Rise, Free Fire), the film will launch on the streaming service on October 21.
Produced by Working Title Films (Emma, Darkest Hour), Rebecca is a mesmerising and gorgeously rendered psychological thriller based on Daphne du Maurier’s beloved 1938 gothic novel (buy at Amazon).
After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a newly married young woman (Lily James) arrives at Manderley, her new husband’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast.
Naive and inexperienced, she begins to settle into the trappings of her new life, but finds herself battling the shadow of Maxim’s first wife, the elegant and urbane Rebecca, whose haunting legacy is kept alive by Manderley’s sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas).
The cast also includes BAFTA nominee Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, Misbehaviour), Emmy Award winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale, Hereditary), Sam Riley (Free Fire, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), and Ben Crompton (Game of Thrones, Strike).
Wheatley directed from a screenplay by Jane Goldman (Kingsman series, X-Men: First Class). The movie was produced by Working Title’s Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, as well as Nira Park.
Filming began in June 2019 and locations included Hartland Quay in Devon, Cranborne Manor in Dorset and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.
The book is described as follows: The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady’s maid, she can barely believe her luck.
It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives–presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.
