While Warner Bros. Pictures has not officially given the green light to the Ready Player One movie sequel, we learned more from author Ernest Cline today about the book sequel, Ready Player Two, available on November 24 (pre-order at Amazon).
In a virtual panel for the New York Comic Con, Cline revealed the synopsis for the anticipated book. The panel was moderated by Wil Wheaton, who narrated the Ready Player One audiobook and will return for Ready Player Two.
The official synopsis goes as follows: “An unexpected quest. Two worlds at stake. Are you ready?
“Days after OASIS founder James Halliday’s contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday’s vaults, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the OASIS more wondrous — and addictive — then even Wade dreamed possible.
“With it comes a new riddle and a new quest, a last Easter egg from Holiday, hinting at a mysterious prize, and an unexpected, impossibly powerful, new and dangerous rival awaits, one who will kill millions to get what he wants. Wade’s life and the future of the OASIS are again at stake, but this time, the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance.”

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the 2018 movie was made for $175 million and grossed an impressive $582.9 million worldwide. $137.7 million of the total came from North American theaters and $445.2 million from overseas markets.
The Ready Player One movie is set in the year 2045, when the real world is a harsh place. The only time Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) truly feels alive is when he escapes to the OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where most of humanity spend their days.
In the OASIS, you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone – the only limits are your own imagination. The OASIS was created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who left his immense fortune and total control of the OASIS to the winner of a three-part contest he designed to find a worthy heir.
When Wade conquers the first challenge of the reality-bending treasure hunt, he and his friends — known as the High Five — are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS and their world.
Spielberg directed the film from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline. Ready Player One was produced by Donald De Line, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Spielberg and Dan Farah. Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Chris deFaria and Bruce Berman served as executive producers.
