Netflix has released the trailer for the drama Pieces of a Woman, starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf. The film will open in select theaters on December 30 before debuting on the streaming service on January 7, 2021.
Directed by Kornél Mundruczó (White God) from a script by Kata Wéber, Pieces of a Woman also stars Ellen Burstyn, Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie, and Jimmie Fails.
In the movie, Martha (Vanessa Kirby) and Sean (Shia LaBeouf) are a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably when a home birth ends in unimaginable tragedy.
Thus begins a yearlong odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with Sean and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife (Molly Parker), whom she must face in court.
Pieces of a Woman, executive produced by Martin Scorsese, is a deeply personal, searing, and ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.
Produced by Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, and Aaron Ryder, the movie was also executive produced by Sam Levinson, Stuart Manashil, Viktoria Petranyi, Jason Cloth, Richard McConnell, Suraj Maraboyina for Creative Wealth Media, Aaron Gilbert for BRON Studios, and Steven Thibault.
“As a European filmmaker, I couldn’t be more excited and appreciative of finding my home for this film with Netflix,” said Mundruczó previously.
“Their taste in independent cinema feels like the United Artists of the 1970s. The true champions of filmmakers and original voices for today.”
The film premiered in competition at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. Vanessa Kirby was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the event.
The cinematography was by Benjamin Loeb, the production design by Sylvain Lemaitre and Frédérique B. Ste-Marie, the costume design by Rachel Dainer-Best, editing by Dávid Janscó, the music by Howard Shore, and make-up and hairstyling by Gemma Lousie Hoff.
