The Original Ghostbusters Cast Has Read the New Script!

Director Jason Reitman attended the Ghostbusters Fan Fest today on the Sony Pictures lot and revealed that the original Ghostbusters cast has read the script for the 2020 movie!

While there’s still no official confirmation, Sigourney Weaver earlier this week said that she, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd will be back, and Reitman hints that Ernie Hudson will return as well.

“If all goes as planned, we’re gonna start shooting in five weeks,” Reitman told the attendees (via the official Twitter account). “Sigourney has read the screenplay… Dan has read it… Ernie’s read the script… Bill Murray has read the script.”

He added that “one of my favorite things about movies [in the ’80s] is that they can be funny and scary at the same time… I want to scare children.”

Scheduled for a July 10, 2020 release, the film stars Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, It Chapter Two), and Carrie Coon (Widows, The Sinner) as a family. Grace has been described as the ostensible lead, with Wolfhard playing her brother and Coon her single mother.

Why did Reitman choose the announced actors? “They’re all three extraordinary actors… and you kinda go, ‘I want to find a way to work with them.’ If you’re looking for a Ghostbusters fan, there isn’t a bigger one than Mckenna Grace,” he said.

Jason Reitman did mention that taking on the project was a very intimidating thing, considering his father, Ivan, directed the first two films. “My father’s the greatest storyteller I know. He’s directed movies that defined my childhood. We wanted to make a love letter to the original movie.” Reitman co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan.

The sequel to the Ghostbusters movies made in the 1980s will center on four teens, one set older, one set younger, with a focus on one family in particular. The new Ghostbusters movie is set in the world of the original two films.
