Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Put on Hold as Scripts Are Reworked

-

Lucasfilm has put the highly-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series on hold as scripts are reworked, according to Collider. The Disney+ project was in pre-production and was expected to go into production this summer.

Rumors began hitting the web last week that the series had been canceled. While that’s not the case, it has certainly been delayed. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series was also expected to consist of six episodes, but The Hollywood Reporter adds that the episode count has now been cut down to four.

Hossein Amini (Drive) was writing the scripts and had written two so far, but Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy as not happy with the story so far. Lucasfilm is now searching for a new writer to pen the series. In the meantime, the pre-production crew at Pinewood Studios in London has been sent home.

Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) remains attached to direct and Ewan McGregor will still return to play Obi-Wan. The series takes place eight years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

IGN caught up with McGregor at an event for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and he said the production will now start in January 2021.

“It’s just slid to next year, that’s all. The scripts were really good,” McGregor said. “I think now that Episode IX came out and everyone at Lucasfilm’s got more time to spend on the writing, they felt like they wanted more time to spend on the writing.”

He added: “I’ve read about eighty, ninety percent of what they’ve written so far, and it’s really, really good. Instead of shooting this August, they just want to start shooting in January, that’s all. Nothing more dramatic than that.

“It often happens in projects, they just wanted to push it to next year. It will have the same release date, I don’t think it will affect the release date. They’re still shooting towards having the [show] release when it was going to be originally.”

Chow, Amini, and McGregor will serve as executive producers alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (The Queen) and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Jason McGatlin, Lucasfilm’s Executive Vice President Production, will serve as co-producer.

Kennedy previously said the following about Chow: “We really wanted to select a director who is able to explore both the quiet determination and rich mystique of Obi-Wan in a way that folds seamlessly into the Star Wars saga. Based on her phenomenal work developing our characters in The Mandalorian, I’m absolutely confident Deborah is the right director to tell this story.”

McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace (1999), Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones (2002), and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith (2005). He also made a voice-only cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).
