Release Dates Set for the Next Two Mission: Impossible Movies

Following the news from January that Christopher McQuarrie was returning to write and direct the next two Mission: Impossible movies, Paramount Pictures has now set specific dates for the seventh and eighth films: July 23, 2021 and August 5, 2022.

In making the announcement, Paramount Pictures Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos said: “We couldn’t be more excited to build on the massive success of Mission: Impossible – Fallout by reteaming with Chris and Tom on these next two films, following two successful collaborations.”

Skydance Media founder and CEO David Ellison will again produce. “We’ve also enjoyed a great partnership with Skydance and David Ellison on these three most recent films and look forward to continued success together on this great franchise,” Gianopulos added.

The next two Mission: Impossible movies are expected to be shot back-to-back.

McQuarrie has written and directed the last two films, which were both big hits. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation was released in 2015 and earned $682.7 million worldwide, while Mission: Impossible – Fallout grossed $791.1 million globally last year and is the biggest film in the franchise.

In Fallout, on a dangerous assignment to recover stolen plutonium, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) chooses to save his friends over the mission, allowing it to fall into the hands of a deadly network of highly skilled operatives intent on destroying civilization. Now, with the world at risk, Ethan and his IMF team (Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson) are forced to work with a hard-hitting CIA agent (Henry Cavill) as they race against time to stop the nuclear threat. The film also stars Sean Harris, Angela Bassett, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin.

Paramount also announced today that the release date for Dungeons & Dragon was pushed back from July 23, 2021 to November 19, 2021, while The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge has been moved up from July 17, 2020 to May 22, 2020.
