NETFLIX NEWS

ASTERIX

Dominique Bazay, Director of Original Animation, revealed that Netflix and France’s leading publisher are teaming up to present Asterix, an iconic figure of French popular culture, to a new generation of worldwide viewers.

“We’re partnering with Hachette’s Les Editions Albert René to create the first-ever animated limited series based on the timeless classic. Renowned French auteur and playwright Alain Chabat will direct and Alain Goldman (Legende Films) will produce,” Bazay said.

She added: “Alain Chabat is no stranger to this iconic property. He wrote and directed 2002’s Mission Cléopâtre, the most successful of Asterix’s numerous appearances on screen and the third highest-grossing feature film in French history. I’m thrilled that Alain Chabat is coming back to Asterix for the first time since then, and that it’s on Netflix. The series will debut in 2023.

“Our series will be adapted from one of the classic volumes, Asterix and the Big Fight, where the Romans, after being constantly embarrassed by Asterix and his village cohorts, organize a brawl between rival Gaulish chiefs and try to fix the result by kidnapping a druid along with his much-needed magic potion. I’m not giving anything away when I tell you, it doesn’t go as planned.”

FATHERHOOD

The Netflix news also included an update on Fatherhood, the Sony Pictures and Higher Ground Productions film. Instead of the movie heading to theaters, it will now hit the streaming service on June 18, 2021. Higher Ground Productions, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, will present the film, alongside Netflix and Sony.

Based on the book Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss & Love by Matthew Logelin, in this heartwarming, funny, and emotional true story, Kevin Hart takes on the toughest job in the world: Fatherhood.

Directed by Paul Weitz (In Good Company, About a Boy) from a script by Dana Stevens (City of Angels, Safe Haven, For Love of the Game) and Weitz. The producers are Marty Bowen, Kevin Hart, David Beaubaire, and Peter Kiernan. The executive producers are Betsy Danbury, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth, Bryan Smiley, Jaclyn Huntling Swatt, Isaac Klausner, Channing Tatum, and Reid Carolin.

The cast also includes Academy Award nominee Alfre Woodard, Lil Rel Howery, DeWanda Wise, Emmy Award nominee Anthony Carrigan, Melody Hurd, and Golden Globe nominee Paul Reiser.

INTERCEPTOR

Netflix has announced Interceptor, directed by Matthew Reilly from a script by Reilly and Stuart Beattie. Production will take place in New South Wales, Australia. The cast includes Elsa Pataky and Luke Bracey. The producers are Matthew Street and Michael Boughen for Ambience Entertainment; and Stuart Beattie. The executive producers include Chris Hemsworth, Kathy Morgan, Christopher Mapp, Robert Slaviero, and Peter D. Graves.

In the film, when 16 nuclear missiles are launched at the US, and a violent coordinated attack simultaneously threatens her remote missile interceptor station, one Army lieutenant must utilize her years of tactical training and military expertise to save humanity as we know it.

Matthew Reilly said: “As those people who have read my novels know, I love telling big action stories that are told at a frenetic pace. I wanted to bring that kind of rocket-fast, relentless, high-stakes storytelling to film, and so Interceptor was born. Elsa is just perfect as our lead: a strong, independent and determined woman who, in the face of overwhelming odds, just refuses to give up.”

Matthew Street added: “Bringing entertaining stories to the screen with tremendous international appeal is at the heart of all Ambience Entertainment films. When the opportunity came to work with award winning writers, Matthew Reilly and Stuart Beattie, we knew we had something special on our hands. Interceptor is a fantastic action story with a stellar cast and with the support of Netflix, we’re excited to see an Australian made film travel to audiences across the globe.”
