Netflix has announced it will develop a feature film and series based on the Redwall books, revealed the cast for Judd Apatow’s The Bubble, and acquired the streaming rights to The Yin Yang Master.
Brian Jacques’ Redwall book series (buy at Amazon) will be reimagined on screen thanks to a rights deal between Penguin Random House Children’s UK and Netflix. Chronicling the adventures of the heroic animals that inhabit the forest haven of Redwall Abbey, the Redwall books have sold in excess of 30 million copies and been translated into more than 20 languages.
A feature film based on Jacques’ first book in the series, Redwall, is currently in development with writer Patrick McHale (Over the Garden Wall, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio), as well as an event series based on the character of Martin the Warrior.
The deal marks the first time that the film rights to the entire book series have been held by the same company and the first time a feature film of any of Jacques’ works will be made.
“We couldn’t be more delighted to announce this deal,” says Ben Horslen, Fiction Publisher, Penguin Random House Children’s. “These perennially popular stories have been etched onto the hearts of millions of readers, and we are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring those beloved characters on screen for families worldwide to enjoy.”
“Brian often travelled the globe to tell his Redwall stories to young audiences, more often than not at their schools,” says Alan Ingram, representative of The Redwall Abbey Company (owner of Jacques’ intellectual property).
“Brian would have been very happy to see that Netflix shares his joy and desire to bring his stories to life as a new universe of films, series and potentially much more for audiences of all ages to enjoy. We are very excited to embark on this new endeavour with Netflix and Penguin Random House UK.”
Netflix has announced that Karen Gillan, Iris Apatow, Fred Armisen, Maria Bakalova, David Duchovny, Keegan-Michael Key, Leslie Mann, Pedro Pascal, and Peter Serafinowicz will star in Judd Apatow’s The Bubble.
Judd Apatow will serve as director, co-writer and producer via his Apatow Productions.
The Bubble is a comedy about a group of actors and actresses stuck inside a pandemic bubble at a hotel attempting to complete a film.
Pam Brady (Hamlet 2, South Park) will serve as co-writer. Barry Mendel, Donald Sabourin and Pam Brady will serve as executive producers.
THE YIN YANG MASTER
Netflix has also secured the global exclusive streaming rights (except for China) to The Yin Yang Master. Adapted from the popular mobile game Onmyōji, the Chinese fantasy film reunites stars Chen Kun and Zhou Xun in their first collaboration in over eight years.
Produced by Chen Kuo-fu and Chang Chia-lu and directed by Li Weiran, The Yin Yang Master will be available exclusively on Netflix in over 190 countries.
In The Yin Yang Master, the world is on the verge of a devastating war with the monsters who are coming back to retrieve the Scaling Stone. Yin Yang Master Qingming (Chen Kun)’s life is in danger and he travels to different worlds to prepare for the upcoming assaults. On his journey, Qingming finds that the key to all the calamities is embracing his hybrid identity of both human and monster.
In the film, we see Chen Kun and Zhou Xun’s characters Qingming and Bai Ni in a relationship. William Chan plays Ci Mu, portrays a sophisticated character that transforms from good to evil.
