Mission: Impossible Movies to Resume Filming in September

-

After shutting down filming earlier this year, the next two Mission: Impossible movies are set to restart filming in September, and the films’ outdoor. The move was confirmed by both actor Simon Pegg and first assistant director Tommy Gormley.

Pegg, who plays Benji Dunn, told Variety: “That will begin with the outdoor stuff. That feels fairly doable, and obviously there will be precautions put in place.” He joked that the fight scenes would need to be shot “five feet apart.”

The actor added: “People that are involved in any close proximity stuff, it will have to be determined that they’re safe to do that. I don’t know what the testing situation is, how that works, or whether they’ll be able to be tested regularly.”

Tommy Gormley also talked about the plans on BBC Radio 4’s Today program on Tuesday morning: “We hope to restart in September. We hope to visit all the countries we planned to. We hope to do a big chunk of it back in the U.K. on the backlot and in the studio.”

Filming for the Mission: Impossible movies was halted in February just days before shooting scenes in Venice. Gormley added that the production will have its challenges due to the scale.

“We are not a chamber piece movie. We do spectacle, and that is what people expect of us. If we have the protocols in place and we break down all the procedures very carefully… we will get it going again. Some things are very challenging such as stunt scenes, crowd scenes etc. but we can’t do a ‘Mission Impossible’ movie and not have a fight scene or car scenes in it.”

The cast of the next two Paramount films includes Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Henry Czerny, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Esai Morales.

Writer and director Christopher McQuarrie is returning to write and direct the two sequels, with the seventh and eighth films arriving on November 19, 2021 and November 4, 2022, respectively. Skydance Media founder and CEO David Ellison will again produce.

McQuarrie recently told the Light the Fuse podcast that they decided to do two movies in order to tell Ethan Hunt’s story. “When we went into making Fallout, I said to Tom, ‘I really want to make this more of an emotional journey for [Hunt].’ Going into this, I said, ‘I want to take what we learned from Fallout and apply it to every character in the movie. I want everyone to have an emotional arc.”

He added that Hayley Atwell’s character will be a “destructive force of nature” in the films. “In this [film], we’ve found something really, really great for the core team. What I can tell you is that they then encounter this other destructive force of nature in the form of Hayley.”

“There’s ambiguity… the interesting thing we’re exploring is her resistance to a situation she finds herself in. How she starts off, where she becomes. The journey of what she comes into and what is asked of her and potentially where she ends up.”

McQuarrie has written and directed the last two films, which were both big hits. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation was released in 2015 and earned $682.7 million worldwide, while Mission: Impossible – Fallout grossed $791.1 million globally last year and is the biggest film in the franchise.
