The film will be followed by Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two on June 28, 2024.
Dead Reckoning Part One is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, and Shea Whigham.
The cast is rounded out by Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Rob Delaney, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, Charles Parnell, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Frederick Schmidt.
The movie is produced by McQuarrie and Cruise. The executive producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Tommy Gormley.
McQuarrie is returning to write and direct the two Paramount Pictures sequels.
McQuarrie previously told the Light the Fuse podcast that they decided to do two movies in order to tell Ethan Hunt’s story. “When we went into making Fallout, I said to Tom, ‘I really want to make this more of an emotional journey for [Hunt].’
“Going into this, I said, ‘I want to take what we learned from Fallout and apply it to every character in the movie. I want everyone to have an emotional arc.”
He added that Hayley Atwell’s character will be a “destructive force of nature” in the films. “In this [film], we’ve found something really, really great for the core team. What I can tell you is that they then encounter this other destructive force of nature in the form of Hayley.”
“There’s ambiguity… the interesting thing we’re exploring is her resistance to a situation she finds herself in. How she starts off, and where she becomes. The journey of what she comes into and what is asked of her and potentially where she ends up.”
McQuarrie wrote and directed the last two films, which were both big hits. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation was released in 2015 and earned $682.7 million worldwide.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout grossed $791.1 million globally in 2018 and is the biggest film in the franchise.
