Even though the movie is not scheduled to open in theaters until Friday, July 2, 2021, Universal Pictures has brought online a new preview for Minions: The Rise of Gru. The preview first aired during a special screening of Minions (check price at Amazon) on NBC Saturday night.
Minions: The Rise of Gru was previously scheduled to be released on July 3, 2020, but current events kept Illumination Entertainment from finishing the movie in time.
Back on April 1st, Chris Meledandri, Founder and CEO of Illumination, said: “In response to the severity of the situation in France, we are temporarily closing our Illumination Mac Guff studio in Paris.
“With this decision we are abiding by the French Government’s guidelines and doing everything possible to slow the spread of the virus as we care for our artists and their families.”
He added: “This means we will be unable to finish Minions: The Rise of Gru in time for our planned global releases in late June and early July. While we all grapple with the enormity of this crisis, we must put the safety and protection of our employees above all.”
Minions: The Rise of Gru is the untold story of one 12-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain. Steve Carell will return as the voice of Gru.
Teeming with Illumination’s signature subversive humor, pop-culture sophistication, full-hearted emotion, bold music sensibility, and over-the-top action, Minions: The Rise of Gru is steered by the franchise’s original creators.
The film is produced by visionary Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborators Janet Healy and Chris Renaud and is directed by returning franchise filmmaker Kyle Balda (Despicable Me 3, Minions).
The co-directors are Brad Ableson (The Simpsons) and Jonathan del Val (The Secret Life of Pets films).
The first film, which is a spin-off prequel to the Despicable Me franchise, earned an impressive $1.159 billion at the worldwide box office in 2015.
