Masters of the Universe Release Date Set for March 2021

UPDATE: Just six days after Sony Pictures set the March 5, 2021 release date, the studio has now looking for a new date.

Sony Pictures and Mattel Films have scheduled the Masters of the Universe release date for March 5, 2021. The film was originally set to hit theaters in December of 2019. The only other film scheduled for March 5, 2021 is the animated feature Nimona, from Disney’s 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios.

Noah Centineo will play He-Man in Masters of the Universe. Aaron and Adam Nee are directing from a script by Iron Man and Men in Black: International screenwriters Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.

Noah Centineo’s credits include The FostersHow to Build a Better Boy, and the Netflix films To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. The actor is currently filming the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel and has a role in the upcoming Charlie’s Angels as well.

The script was previously written by David S. Goyer, who is also an executive producer.

Masters of the Universe is produced by Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, along with DeVon Franklin. Mattel’s Julia Pistor and David Voss will executive produce.

The animated He-Man and the Masters of the Universe aired in the 1980s and the property was also turned into a 1987 feature film starring Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Jon Cypher, Chelsea Field, Billy Barty, Courteney Cox, Robert Duncan McNeill, and Meg Foster.

In other release news, STXfilms has set an August 23, 2019 release date for My Spy, starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman. The distributor has also pushed back 21 Bridges, starring Chadwick Boseman, from July 12, 2019 to September 27, 2019.
